It's a strange reaction to tyranny. You can't take all of the policies and positions the Democrats hold as a party and make a coherent vision of reality out of it, and this is just a single manifestation of that.

Another is abortion. Regardless of how you feel about the procedure, it is so unevenly applied to minorities that in any other context it could be seen as a soft genocide. If for some reason conservatives were for the same exact policy, liberals would decry it as exactly that.
