Perhaps a rephrasing of this post would be in order? For the sake of transparency, I'd like to say that I'm speaking to you all as a professional Historian who teaches at the university level. This is a conversation I have with my students all the time:
Germans today shouldn't have to bear a generational guilt for something that happened 80 years ago. Nobody born today should have to continue to bear the burden of a previous generation's actions, in the same way that today's society cannot retroactively impose today's standards on the past. How long must they bear the burden? Who gets to decide how much is enough? If the future must be made to pay for the mistakes of the past, what is the medium of exchange--money, territory, all firstborn males--what?? It's not fair.
People cannot help but to work within the context of their current reality; but to burden that reality with a cruel demand for reparations for past wrongs will only create a new generation of bitterness, a new generation of dysfunction, rage, a sense of persecution, hopelessness and nihilism. The Allies' demand for the affixing of war guilt and reparations was precisely what led to the rise of Hitler in the first place! This is not how we become wiser.
Fortunately, the answer is easy! History is a magnificent discipline; but one of its best attributes is that it can teach us about the wrongs of the past without unduly burdening or 'breaking' the present. Historical research and writing, when done properly, is dispassionate--neutral and nonjudgmental--toward contemporary readers. In other words, it's a potential cautionary tale that doesn't make specific demands or indictments against those in the here-and-now. When has humiliating people ever led to a postive outcome?
And, this is the huge problem I face in the History profession today: modern Historical writing is leftist activism and cultural marxism disguised as research. Its unstated, but universally understood, real purpose is to guilt the west into coughing up its hard-won gains and then go, unresisting, into the dustbin of history. Germany is ground zero of that effort. If the left can successfully badger Germany into committing national, cultural and demographic seppuku, who's next?
That's what's at stake. We all bear a grave responsibility in helping one another to prevent the rise of the next genocidal maniac, not inducing today's youth into flagellating themselves to atone for the last one.
Do you find it odd that none white countries are never expected to atone for their past sins? Like never, not even once? Yet only white majority countries are expected to do it daily? Seems odd to me.
Hm. I agree that, because of its extraordinary wealth, the west has been guilt-tripped to 'self-flagellate' the necessary funds toward the upkeep of those who're anticipating a windfall off of those dumb Whites (if the left can just convince them of how 'reprehensible' they've been and how much 'good' it'll do their souls to be that much lighter in their treasury). But, that pressure to 'atone' isn't restricted to the west.
Few people are paying attention to it, and fewer-still know what's at stake, but a similar ploy is being played out in none other than Turkey, but with the roles reversed! In this case, it's an Indo-European (read: 'white'), Christian demographic that's seeking to guilt-trip a Ural-Altaic (read: 'non-white'), Muslim state into atonements that have a reparational, piously 'redemptive' (and, need I add, a hugely lucrative) benefit.
The Armenians have been putting a tremendous amount of pressure on the world to recognize the so-called "Armenian Genocide". Why? Because the territory that the Armenians occupied during the late Ottoman Empire, at the time when the "genocide" took place, has now been developed by the modern Turkish government with the building of a huge hydroelectric dam on the headwaters of the Euphrates River. The Turks turned a scrubby desert into an agricultural Garden of Eden. If the Armenians can get recognition of such a "genocide", they stand to get that territory back (along with its shiny new dam)!
And since its followers, including those in Turkey, still largely believe in the justification for such killings, I'd say some apologies, flagellation and reparations are indeed in order.
ELI5: The actual Nazi party was comprised of national socialists. They were on par with communists, however instead of seizing the means of production they instead focused mainly on the racial issues. So while the commies were all about power to the worker, the Nazi party was all about preserving the proper german blood lines and eliminating all others.
