Single shot rifle of a small caliber is a great way to get kids into it and is pretty safe. Low kick from a .22 as well.
Then larger rifles as they grow.
I would not recommend handguns or shotguns to first time users, as they have a bit more kick and people tend to overact when it kicks, which means it can kick really hard (because people act like in the films, they dont always fully realize that guns cause it themselves).
For first time buyers, a cheap smaller caliber rifle is a way to get used to it, especially since the ammo isn't that expensive, but larger rifles are always fun.
But personally? M16's all the way (I'm a sucker for the traditional stuff). Or AR-15, because they're so fucking diverse that it is insane.
