So recently a friend of mine and myself expressed our political leanings to each other. Suffice to say, and not surprising, it got heated and a little ugly. I kept calm and let him go on his anti Trump rant.
I still like this dude, and his biggest "point" was that Trump thinks of himself first and the country second. He believes that everything Trump does earns him and his many companies a profit and Trump "lines his pockets," so to speak.
I asked him what was wrong with Trump benefitting from deals he is making for our country, he couldn't respond with anything other than our President shouldn't be allowed to make money for himself. "He may donate his salary every year but do you know how much money he is taking in on the side?"
Has anyone encountered this argument, and if yes, has anyone really dove into specific examples against this argument? I like to think I'm educated on many political topics, mostly thanks to this site and our sub on reddit. But here I am having trouble coming up with specific responses, because he doesn't have specific examples. I'm assuming the tax breaks his "rich" friends got?

Ask your friend if he can give you examples of Trump illegally making money or avoiding taxes or violating any laws. It is difficult to prove a negative, so ask him to show his work; if he has nothing then shove his nose in it and spank his azz good.
And he does have nothing, false media talking points. Trump has been and is being examined thoroughly, 30 million on Mueller alone, millions of man-hours have been invested in scrutinizing him closely...nada. The IRS has crawled up his wazoo for a long time, Trump is audited regularly...nada.

This is why we had to have Trump, right now this Timeline only Trump can do what we are doing. The reason WHY only Trump can do this is he is not corrupted, the media cannot control him, politicians cannot control him, foreign interests cannot control him, satan cannot control him. Put the onus on your friend; force him to show his work or shove it in his face he has nothing and is a fraud, just like the entire democrat party, just like the media and hollywood, a fraud. H e may get angry, but later he'll thank you if he is your friend.
No need to provide evidence. Put the burden on the leftist to prove wrongdoings done by Trump. They cant and likely the most investigated man in the world is breaking no law if he was he'd have been nailed to the floor by now.
Ask him how many of his sons work for foreign governments that profit from his decisions.

Why I have hope for the guy is he doesn't seem to be a clinton supporter. Or a leftist outright. He seems like he could be shown the light, although it will probably just end up being bar talk and not go anywhere.
There are articles showing that his net worth has dropped drastically since he became president. Obama’s net worth has skyrocketed.
No idea but you might remark that if Trump likes holding meetings on his own properties that is because they are harder to bug. He has a LITTLE more control over who goes there, because he owns the place. Any fees these meetings generate are not important sums of money to those businesses, or to Trump.
The idea that a man of seventy who had ten billion dollars, spent a half billion of his own money becoming president, in order to make more money, doesn't convince. Trump could have relaxed and played with his many grandchildren. He did not need money. And he entered the presidency down a half billion.
I am not aware that Trump is in oil. Making the US the world's foremost oil exporter is a big change he has achieved.
There is just no need for money in that family. No Trump, including the kids, needs money.
Trump is in real estate, hotels, casinos, golf courses, and that's all, as far as I know. Entertainment-y stuff.

I am not sure what your friend means. Anything Trump gets from the presidency would first have to pay back the half billion he spent getting elected. And he can only count on four years to do it.
We know Trump will have his eight years but the nature of the deal going in is for four years as a certainty.
After all, Trump will then be on the hook for ANOTHER half billion, depending on what he wants to spend, to get his NEXT term.
So the deal stays the same: spend a half billion and get only four years to make it back, THEN see if you can profit? Does that make sense?
While starting out with ten billion at age seventy or seventy four. When you could have just done nothing and been fine.
Some people said Trump just wanted the ego jollies of getting the one thing he had not had yet in life, the presidency. But then he became an active, not a preening passive, president. He cut taxes, boosted our oil production, boosted the economy, and repatriated a lot of industrial jobs. Personally went to North Korea and met with their leadership. Negotiated new business relationship with China. Discomfited Russia which is a major oil exporter. Started a Space Force. His two Supreme Court judges have not bothered anybody once on the bench. They are both acting like seasoned professionals.

Well that's what I had thought too. I might not have mentioned, but I manage a bar and was bartending, and he was drinking with his son and best friend. So they teamed up on me, but really had no way of backing up what they said. No example, no proof, no anything. Just the assumption that because he gave tax breaks to everyone, he was serving himself first. I really honestly don't know what he was referring to.
The Twitter thing he mentioned I can understand. Tweeting a photo of yourself on rocky Balboa's body might rub people the wrong way. For me, it blew my mind, in a good way!

As for "he reduced taxes on the rich," well, he eliminated the state-and-local tax deduction, but only if you own very, very upscale real estate. This has made it more expensive to live in high tax areas such as New York and California. This is quite a blow to the rich in those areas and indeed, many are leaving. Trump himself left. He decided to make Mar A Lago his official residence. And Trump was born and raised in New York City, as were his children. Trump threw himself out of the city of his birth.

Quite poor people got no tax reduction . ..... because they do not pay taxes. At all. Except sales taxes, those horrible things. They benefited from generally improving conditions: there are a LOT more jobs around just in general.
There was real fear that reducing taxes would make it impossible for government programs, social security, medicare and medicaid, to pay vulnerable people what they need. This has NOT happened because of the Laffer curve. I am no expert but that means that when you reduce regulations and taxes on business, productivity comes out of the woodwork. People who have been sitting home leave the house, work, and guess what. They pay taxes on their new income. Government revenues GO UP WHEN YOU REDUCE TAXES. That is severely counter-intuitive but it happened. There has been a serious increase in the number of working age people who are employed.
Black and brown unemployment is 3 percent, which means, zero. Three percent of working people are always between jobs or disabled. It has never been this low ever.
There are still problems to address: the debt, the social flavor of lawlessness, the education department, the opiate crisis, gang activity, the illegitimacy rate, the low birthrate, the marriage dearth. It's not all paradise but there are big, big, improvements. In three years.
