All of the conservative sites were reporting the withdrawal, so everyone was misinformed. I do hope you aren't speaking specifically to me, there were about 8 other posts besides mine today saying the same thing.
And, last thing I'll say, The_Donald had even pinned the story for most of the day, so the mods weren't sure it was a false alarm story for a while either.

Exactly right!
Trump is the Commander in Chief, this general runs the risk of losing his stars if that letter goes against what his commander orders.
By the same token, it doesn't seem likely to me that the general would have sent that letter without direction from the Joint Chiefs.
It may also be the equivalent of "We'll get right on that," while he waits for direction.
We can still swat Iranians from drones based in Kuwait as well. Fine by me.
