There is no point in having a senate trial if you want to maximize Trump's chance of re-election, and a republican majority in both houses of Congress. No matter how things play out the press will vilify Trump and the Republican Party. They can spend 12 months calling 55 witnesses and call Mueller in to do another investigation, and then have him come in and say Trump's completely innocent, and the press will still vilify Trump and the Republican Party.
Moreover, if you think a senate trial will be a good opportunity to "redpill normies" you are wrong. The press will simply filter out anything good for Trump, and only report on the slander of Democrat witnesses. What will "redpill normies" is if the Republicans simply trash the articles of impeachment, claiming that Nancy Pelosi broke protocol because there was no case. Yes the press will flip out, the press will always flip out. But the lingering psychological effect on "normies" will be the delegitimization of the impeachment articles. Holding a senate trial, on the other hand, merely legitimizes the whole thing.
Also remember, most Republicans are as big as scumbags as the Democrats, they hate Trump just as much but they can't screw with him directly, because they will lose electiond if they do. So they're stuck but they don't like it, and they constantly try to act in covert ways to undermine him.
That's why the wall wasn't built, that's why Trump hasn't been as aggressive as he could be on a lot of issues. He doesn't actually have their support, they'll stab him in the back as soon as they think they can get away with it. And that's why they're talking about actually holding a stupid trial that does nothing but benefit the Democrats. I understand many of you want to be optimistic and go against your better sense and pretend like some how some kind of Justice will come out of this. Wrong. It would just be a way for the Republican establishment to weaken Trump's power, it serves no other purpose.
But luckily the man has leverage--us. Trump's voters have to call for an end to the fake impeachment, with no trial. Times up. Write letters to congressman spread memes, alter the right-wing zeitgeist so that everybody is perfectly clear on this point. we can't control the left or the mainstream Media or Reddit, but we can change the mindset of Trump's conservative base and that will be enough. And it is necessary: the impeachment articles are trash and they deserve to be thrown away like trash. Any politician on the conservative side who suggest to the contrary should be ashamed for what he is.

I just don't know. Seems like more risk for Dems in a Senate trial, way more. But caution and skepticism can't be a bad thing, OP. I know exactly what you mean about how the press would play it, but they couldn't do any good for their cause while their D party held the reins for that shit show in the House. So I think they'd end up more playing defense. Just mull it over, stay chill.
There is literally no risk for the Democrats in a senate trial, unless the Republicans refused to allow them to call witnesses.
But they'll be "fair" because they are "principled" in order to weaken Trump without having to face consequences. and the people in this thread telling me to chill will help them get away with it.
I agree with you Red. Had this thought a few days ago when Mitch said they would start without the article being handed over. Changing rules and whatnot to make it happen. It has absolutely no business being in the senate for a trial and turtle knows it. Both sides work together to fuck the people and Trump is the one taking the heat for us. Don’t fret too much about the process, but let it be a reminder that there is no good politician.
