Can someone please explain in detail for a non computer geek, what exactly I am supposed to do here. What happens if they grab my IP?

Use a VPN, it helps. And if you can set your IP to 'roam' that works some too, but the sad fact is nothing can protect you from people who really really want to get you, if you turn a device 'on' you are at risk.

Protonmail offers a pretty good VPN and free mails too, don't use google for anything if you can help it, use Duckduckgo for searches, helps with tracking and known security risks.

But you cannot be active on the interwebs and not be at risk unless you are really at the top of your game.

Don't be extra-stupid but don't overly worry about it either, if it looks 'iffy' to you don't click.

I refuse all unknown sites until I check some, as I can. At some point this is all risky tho.

It's about doxxing via your IP linked to your reddit account IP so they can go through your post history and find out who you are. Remember what CNN did? Same thing. By having a reference to you, should you ever rise to power or the forefront of media then they can pull shit out on you. All via IP.

I get your practicality and reference to IP being just a basic item but in this case the OP is correct.

How would they know your IP address on reddit though?

Any site you visit knows your IP. It’s not very valuable overall but if you want to see if multiple user (shill) accounts originate from the same IP or IP range (possibly indicating coming from the same business or institution), it can be enough to get you banned.

Liberal Account A comes here and gets banned. Liberal Account B comes and is acting sorta bit hush, the admin could compare the IP captured from visitor A and see if it has the same IP as accounT B and then ban B for circumventing van policy. This is how Reddit works and it’s all automated. There are tons of caveats and ways around it but that’s the discussion in a nutshell.

You know you can educate us and clear up any misinformation without attacking people personally. When you insist on doing that for not reason it makes you look like a lefty. At the end of the day you've done nothing to set anyone straight.

Incorrect and you are rude and a bad example of our community.

How is it that reddit bans people when they get banned then turn around and make another account to circumvent the ban? You think it's magic? It's simple IP tracking. Can you please tell me another method they would use?

Sounds like you are a black hat, steer clear of this one gentlemen.

"your posting history and your IP have fuck all to do with each other unless the scary fucker has already cracked the site or is an admin"

Isn't is a fair assumption that reddit (and other) admins are not to be trusted? Beyond that though, serious question. I think running through a VPN helps in most cases. Would you agree? I've been coding for 30 years but more on the "behind the firewall" side of things and internet security is not a forte.

This is basically what you get when the public is educated about computers by hollywood and mainstream media.

Reverse the polarity!

Lastly, the idea doxxing somebody by IP is fucking ridiculous.

To be fair, so is a double X in doxing.

(Not a critique of your post, which I upvoted, Gator...nobody cares that much about letters, I get it...I just like pointing out weird inconsistencies I guess :)

ItsTooMuchWinning 3 points ago +3 / -0

When vowels are separated by only one consonant, it typically makes the first vowel long. Most of the time when you see a double consonant, it's to keep the first vowel short. Doxxing needs a double X.

"X"cept with the letter X.

That is, unless you aim to go full didactic pedant [not that you would man] and insist also on changing the spellings of all these for consistency:

Axed

Axes

Boxes

Boxed

Boxer

Boxing

Coxes

Coxing

Coxed

Oxen

Hexing

Hexes

Hexed

Maxes

Maxed

Maxing

Saxes

Sexes

Sexed

Relaxes

Waxes

Waxing

Waxed

Faxed

Faxes

Faxing

Luxury

Taxes

Taxed

Taxing

Taxi

Taxis

Taxiing

Doxes

Doxing

Doxed

Outfoxes, outfoxing...outfoxed :)

Nary a double X to be found

I dunno, it's an X thing

No one's ever been able to show why doxing would need two X's but none of the other words do...I'm open minded but skeptical

what if we just rename it to Dawcksing?

1
krzyzowiec 1 point ago +1 / -0

It's not true you can't do anything about it. It's slightly technical, but you could have uBlock prevent third party scripts by default. Or disable prefetching in your browser.

I don't think it's worth worrying about them getting your IP, but executing arbitrary code is always problematic.

Well what I do is block all scripts by default (which obviously breaks a lot of sites) and then enable just the ones I need to make the site function.

Most sites don't directly host content, they just embed youtube for example, or use something like disqus to provide comments, so after I enable it once I have many sites covered.

Then I just export this list to a file and import it into my addon if I reinstall or wipe my computer. It's not perfect, but it makes the web much more bearable. It stops a lot of garbage like automatic redirects from occurring, but it is painful to set up the first time.

If you have a static IP, they have your location. You are digitally doxxed.

5
DaemonKrog 5 points ago +6 / -1

Most people don't have a static IP, but it doesn't really matter. The IP (static or dynamic) can be used to at least attempt a breach of your private network/your computers, can be used to show your geographic location (though usually not accurate), and could be used to gain more information through your ISP about the end user such as name/address (more difficult and would require them to hack the ISP).

Honestly I'm less worried about someone getting my IP than about clicking a link and getting a virus / malware / spyware / ransomeware through a bad link. If something / someone gets your IP and brags about it, it's more likely a scare tactic than anything else.

I was agreeing with you... My whole point was that getting an IP wasn't really that big of a deal and you couldn't really do much with it besides TRY a few things.

The issue is not geolocation, it’s building an online database of profiles on trump supporters.

1
Barbieblonde 1 point ago +2 / -1

Lots of people that support Trump live in very rural areas. There could be only one or two homes in a 10 square mile area.

Proton is heavily rumored to be a honeypot.

Remember what they say, when things appear too good to be true.
