Look at the picture closely. They are walking in the grass because it was just painted and they don't want to get paint on their shoes. I doubt most kids today respect the flag enough to take the grass when it dries. Sad times.
It's actually brilliant for Iran to paint the US and Israeli flags on the ground. So while the students are protesting Iranian leaders the Western media can take still pictures from the protests of Iranians walking over the US flag and their captions can read
"Iranians trample US flag during protests".
Notice that "Iranian protesters walk around US flag" is no where on CNN, BBC, MSNBC, etc?
