Trump has stated why he wants a trial: he'll subpoena everyone even remotely involved in Russiagate and all the other shenanigans, and cross examine them under oath in the Senate. Comey, Brennan, Clapper, Sztrock, Hunter and Joe Biden, Kerry, hell he might even subpoena Hillary, Obama and Holder too, since this shit started while they were still in office.

This is my hope. For historical reasons, let alone entertainment value.

SnackyPete 4 points ago +4 / -0

This, exactly. The swamp took the bait and fell for it. Now their testimony will condemn them all and leave Trump fully exonerated.

However, we may be treated to some doorknob hangings before we get to see some of them testify.

Unless I’m missing something Trump has no control over which witnesses get interviewed. He can request through his lawyers but the senate has to vote on who they want to speak too. If that’s the case then only the swamp gets to talk to whomever they want, not who the president wants. If one you pedes knows different than please correct me.

POTUS' legal team has full authority to subpoena witnesses and compel them to testify or be held in contempt.

Worst case, they show up, plead the 5th and clam up for the duration of the hearings. Even so, he can take torpedo the electoral campaigns of Biden and others by requiring them to be in DC to attend the hearings.

But there's also the discovery process and the documents, emails, text messages, etc, etc from the FISA court, FBI, CIA and so on that will be damning, especially if Trump follows form and declassifies it, as is his privilege as POTUS.

3
PinochetIsMyHero 3 points ago +3 / -0

The accused has a right to call witnesses. This is absolutely basic.

0
luke21 0 points ago +1 / -1

So then they don't show up. What then?

1
Digital_Boy 1 point ago +1 / -0

Depends on how politically connected they are. In Eric Holder's case, he was held in contempt and nothing was done. A relative nobody would be arrested and jailed.

Because the Swamp = the DNC + the GOP

Most politicians on both sides in Congress are corrupt, deep state swamp creatures. Whether they're in the House or the Senate.

It's not Trump versus the DNC. It's Trump versus the corrupt DNC and GOP swamp.

PursuitOfTruth 10 points ago +10 / -0

Still, after 3 years, not enough people understand this! WTF

Romney is an especially insidious corrupt creature. Most people I have heard describe him as an honest man are not honest themselves. He used his position in government so his son could steal Ukrainian US backed loans. We're talking millions here.

1
WinstonSmith1984 1 point ago +1 / -0

What if he's NOT especially insidious, but rather average, and just below average at hiding it?

Yeup. They're in bed with each other. I'd say they feed off each other, but they're one in the same. Neolibs are just neocons rebranded. In reality, they're authoritarians, through and through, and between the communists, the fascists, the dictators, and monarchs of old, the only common denominator amidst their political systems is just that. Authoritarianism. Can't trust a small group of people with that much power any more than you can trust your neighbour's dog not to bark.

Puncle 2 points ago +2 / -0

their goal is to get reelected and to go too directly against Trump now would be political suicide for a Republican. I believe you misunderstand, they're driven by self-interest for the most part, not a blind unity with globalism. Those that are the head of the party drive the party's direction. They vote what they think will keep them elected, and I agree this is the swamp but the GOP establishment fell in 2016 and reunified into a new direction in 2018 when those that didn't swap over were torn out.

The reason it hasn't been rejected yet is also self interest of the Republican Party and Trump himself. It is an opportunity to tear up the allegations and tear into the Democrats. They can take every single one of the three top running Democrats to the trial off the campaign trail. They can use it to clear the Republican Party of wrongdoing and protect the down ballot Republicans. They can use it as a hammer, shield, and sword. They can subpeona every single person involved in Berisma and the Manafort investigation from Pelosi to Comey to Biden. This is why it hasn't been rejected. There are old elements that want to push it through because they are part of that swamp still like Mit Romney, those that still want to maintain the old swamp are the ones who want to push it through as swiftly as possible.

My understanding is that they are only holding the trial as Nancy promised them souvenir pens.

Honestly they are pretty cool pens. When Trump inevitably “fires back” at pelosi, he should release his own line of similar pens

It’s not a criminal proceeding. It’s a political one.

2
Staatssicherheit 2 points ago +3 / -1

The right to a fair trial is not waived just because it is a political matter. In fact, it should be enhanced.

2
muslimporn 2 points ago +2 / -0

It's still meant to be fair according to the same principles enjoyed in criminal law. Either way it's a trial and should be conducted appropriately.

It is however possible to hold a trial for gross misconduct.

On the other hand even if you find a conflict of interest in the phone call that's not gross misconduct.

The only sense in which it is gross is that the democrats grossly exaggerate it.

It's also on the ridiculous side when the democrats are also in a serious position of having conflicts of interests in all of this as well as having done the same themselves on multiple accounts and in the course of this process!

saco 8 points ago +8 / -0

The way I see it is this whole impeachment is illegitimate. There was no crime committed and the whole process has been tainted since the beginning. Democrats wanted to impeach Trump since before he was even elected. The senate is validating this by holding a trial and they should not.

6
CreepyPornLawyer 6 points ago +6 / -0

Someone posted earlier that this whole peach mint thing can be used against GOP senators up for re-election. “This senator colluded with the President to exonerate him before even having a trial. There was no due process. They didn’t even allow witnesses at the trial”

They’re losers. Wouldn’t surprise me if this was the reason why they timed it this way. There is definitely more to the peach mints than what they’re saying. They’re using it for 2020 somehow, I just haven’t figured that part out yet

4
mintscape 4 points ago +4 / -0

There is definitely more to the peach mints than what they’re saying.

100%, there are all kinds of games going on behind the scenes and most of it we never even hear about. It is always about manipulating our perceptions and they use horse trading, blackmail and any other dirty trick they can to do it. Trump is the only exception to this, he plays it straight.

4
CQVFEFE 4 points ago +5 / -1

Timing also looks like "Hmmm, Trump will sign the huge China trade deal and the USMCA in the same week...let's announce our witch trial then!!!! Can't possibly have the people think anything GOOD for the USA is happening, can we?"

4
Kholland65 4 points ago +4 / -0

The weakness that so many GOP members have and trump doesn’t (hence the reason he won), is he doesn’t have this misguided sense of morality and fairness. These old GOP members think they are somehow earning themselves political points with both their constituents and their enemies by playing nice and fair. The problem is the other side has no interest in playing fair or acting in good faith, and they sure as hell aren’t going to give you credit for it either. You’re dreaming if you think Pelosi or other Democrats are going to shake hands and make up because “those GOP guys were so nice and ran such a fair trial so let’s set aside our differences”. Gotta fight fire with fire. They want to run a shame trial in the house, you run a shame trial in the senate and use whatever tactics you can to tar and feather your opponent.

4
PursuitOfTruth 4 points ago +4 / -0

The old GOP members are not playing nice and fair, they are in on the laundering scams themselves. Everyone in the congress and senate have had everything they've ever said or written recorded by a corrupt DOJ. Then people can be blackmailed, or worse, have "evidence" planted. Wanna expose something? Watch your back, think Seth Rich. This is the game that is being played right now. And sadly it's still better than any other country in the whole world.

Belleoffreedom 4 points ago +4 / -0

A dismissal for failure to state a claim upon which relief can be granted IS an action taken by a trial court, and it terminates a case.

The Senate should vote to dismiss. And we will know everything we need to know, from that vote.

3
Hexagon 3 points ago +3 / -0

Cause the GOP is short of the 51 votes needed. The usual RINO suspects no doubt. That is why we need to increase GOP control with pro-Trump senators

Because they are his enemy and, by extension, yours and mine. Stop thinking that the GOP is any different than the democrats, that's how they've continued to thrive all of these decades.

On the contrary. This trial is necessary to expose the house and sentate dems crimes for what they are. Trump merely incites them to go through with the hoax by superficialy demanding to drop the trial dead in its tracks.

Trust the Plan!

Yawnz13 1 point ago +3 / -2

The Democrats delayed sending the articles of impeachment to the Senate hoping they would just dismiss it out of hand. This would allow every single Dem candidate to campaign on an impeachment cover-up story in 2020.

However, their constituents want a trial because they think Trump will actually get kicked out of office, and since the Dems started this impeachment thing way too early, their own voting base combined with the Republican unwillingness to dismiss has essentially forced their hand.

Now that the trial seems to be a sure thing, I'd be on the lookout for shit going down in Virginia. They've already arrested three SUPPOSED Neo-Nazis who were planning on being at the 2A rally, probably for serial jaywalking or some-such nonsense.

Seriously, gotta think a little deeper than that.
