Actually the longer tradition is for senators to be appointed — from when the Constitution was first ratified in 1787 to when the 17th amendment was ratified in 1913 is 126 years. From 1913 to today is just 106 years. So... the “traidtion” is that senators are not chosen by popular vote.
While I have your attention, this amendment was a huge mistake and upset the balance of power between the states and the people. It should be repealed.
