There's more to it than that. Puerto Rico has a different language, different culture, different demography, different origins, and basically is no more American than Guatemala is. They are a territory because of an American experiment with imperialism approximately 120 years ago. This has been a great arrangement for them, but we don't get anything out of it.
I have liked the Puerto Ricans I have met but I also don't believe in imperialism, so I would like to see them restored to independence, personally.

Restored to independence? When is the last time they were independent? The 1400s ?
Independent of the United States, specifically. I don't think Spain has the money to support a welfare colony far removed from their shores.
