The thing most people forget about SARS is it happened in 2003 and there was not the kind of international travel to and from China like there is today. Populations were also more isolated as they hadn't really started shipping people into cities and the people lived a bit more in rural areas

Plus, these things normally only kill people who are in weak health. Like, newborns and old people. This new one is killing medical staff.
