'Redneck' is a term that originated as a slang term for farmers. Because they would spend so much time out in the fields, providing for their family, that the back of their necks would get sunburned. That's a redneck. So it's no wonder ivory tower elites on the coasts turned it into a pejorative.

There are people who actually think like this. Guess where they live. Go ahead. Guess.

Also, don't forget the idiots who say: "That's where I get my meat from - supermarkets! Why kill poor defenseless animals when supermarkets have meat for sale without killing anything?!"

9
khp041000 9 points ago +9 / -0

The best part is...that deer I dropped is entirely free range and healthier meat than whatever artisinal cut you bought at your WholePaycheck.

4
SwampSwan 4 points ago +4 / -0

Exactly!

We harvest venison & all of our fish. I keep hens for eggs, but buy Smart Chicken to eat.

A couple times a year we'll buy good steak for the grill, but other than that we just don't eat beef - venison is our preference for many reasons.

We also keep a large garden. Livin' the good life out in the boonies!

It evolved into a derogatory term for all rural whites and eventually got branded by Jeff Worthy to the point it was conflated with traits normally labeled "white trash". Like any racial term that generalizes groups of people under one label, it's lazy, dullard thinking.

7
djmarcone 7 points ago +7 / -0

well I think Redneck was derogatory before Foxworthy got ahold of it.

Sorry to rain on your parade, but it is not where the term came from.

It was for the red bandannas they wore around their necks.

See here: Coal miners and their Battle of Blair Mountain

Redneck is a term that originated from union workers in coal country -- not farmers.

1
NocturnalPatrol 1 point ago +2 / -1

Then how did it become a pejorative for white people who live outside the city and between the coasts?

2
zettapede 2 points ago +2 / -0

Upon review I see that the term predates the coal union usage by just a few decades.

CPA, MBAs, and PhD from Wharton, U of MD, and Johns Hopkins as well as various other professional certs and distinctions, I'm also a registered Democrat who's voted straight ticket Dem in every election since 1992. 2020 is the year in which I will vote for my first Republican. Judging from the Leftist, anti 1st and 2nd Amendment policies of my local govt. candidates here in Montgomery County, MD, I very well might straight ticket for the GOP.

Hey we've all become bigots, racists, nazis etc in the last 3 years. We didn't change; an election happened. I have a multi-cultural family, I respect women, I have gay friends that I treat no differently, my girlfriend is a brown skinned immigrant, and I have an engineering degree from a large university in a blue state. But the day Trump was elected apparently I became a nazi. We just have to realize we are dealing with complete morons on the left. I guess if what I am is going to be called 'redneck' then so be it I'm a redneck. I don't really care what you call me as long as in reality I am the good guy.

There's also a spit cup next to my keyboard.

Hobbies include turning wrenches on motorcycles and designing guitar amplifiers.

I am 100% redneck. And proud of it too.

As my aunt once told me. "You've got to get that piece of paper" that proves you are well read, well spoken, and educated.

yeah the ability to actually GET a meaningful degree of some sort is almost more important than what the degree is in.

I thought it was bigotted to think a subset of people are stupid based on stereotypes. Way back when, I used to think Conservatives were nothing more than stupid, gun-totting rednecks. As I matured, however, I realized they had a more sound and mature understanding about politics and philosophy than I did in my Liberal youth.

I'm a centrist and think both sides got smart people, but the ones who actually seem more engaged and informed with and about politics (fake news networks don't count) certainly lean to the right.

Too often do I catch my liberal friends being caught up in verifiable bullshit cuz they're too lazy to check their sources. This is not a rare occurrence and is one that is actually backed up by statistical evidence, given leftists still trust the media significantly more than people on the right.

Can't find the one research paper that showed conservatives are actually more balanced in terms of where they get their news sources from (I think it was 60% cons 40% lib) while liberals overwhelmingly got it from liberal sources, something to the tune of 80 to 90 percent. In lieu of that, conservatives definitely trust the media much less, which means they are more likely to look up their sources.

I grew up in the very rural midwest. Many of my friends grew up on farms.

I have a STEM degree from a prestigious private college, work in industry in a STEM field and also own an IT business on the side and write sci fi books for fun.

I own firearms, have 1 wife and 2 kids, believe in God, hate taxes and cried a little when Trump won because it means my kids will be more likely to have a better future.

I may have done engineering and medical school at a so-called elite university. But don’t count that against me.

My people are the people who work their butts off to provide for other important to them (at work, in the home, wherever) and who love this country. And many of the best of them are “rednecks.”

I grew up in hunting blinds, fishing boats, and among people I respect to this day for their wisdom, heart, warmth, and wit. One doesn’t have to have a doctorate to be sharp as a tack, or an Ivy League pedigree to be a person of consequence.

The Dems truly are rudderless. Openly mocking the common American on TV. Could there be a more stupidly self-destructive choice?

I said it before and I’ll say it again, the evolution of their party has been horrifying. Without the media on their side the democrat party would have already collapsed and folded. Only through propaganda have they managed to keep 1/6 of the government, and every day that goes by more people tune it out.

Apparently I'm a redneck too... (with a Masters from UTA and a PhD in Applied Physics from CalTech). I support Trump... and I can both read AND spell. strange... Messier's Dunning and Kruger's ground breaking work does in fact indicate (in a nutshell), that Stupid people don't know they're stupid, because they are in fact... STUPID. a point that CNN demonstrates with alarming regularity.

5
Gonzo262 5 points ago +5 / -0

"The definition of “redneck” must be pretty inclusive"

Remember Yank was an insult, so was GI, and so was deplorable. Any epithet applied to good people, no matter how mean spirited, will eventually become a compliment.

I'm descended from a poor dirt farm family in the deep south. My family is full of life serving members of the military. I"m a wife, a mother, a sister and an Accountant and HR department head with a small, family owned business. We work hard, we play hard and how dare those people at CNN deride me and my family. I voted for Trump in 2016 and will do so proudly this year.

Glad to have you as part of the Redneck Renegade. As a white male from southeast Texas who does hold on to his God, Guns and the Constitution (The real one and not the mushy living, breathing one,) I only deviate from their stereotype in having a BS in Energy Resources Management and a borderline genius IQ. But beyond that, I have greater wisdom than mere intellect.

Believing the garbage you are being taught in "Higher" education is true foolishness, even though you may be praised by your companion mind numbed robots.
