I agree with you, but then I also don't agree. The problem is the requirement that you appear in court repeatedly to swear you are poor. Its a trap for the unwary, and its using state coercion and harassment to help creditors collect from debtors.

In many states, as long as you send in some sort of payment, even $20 per month, on time, every month, this won't happen to you. Everyone needs to check out what your state's law is on this.

If you can't be sent to jail for debt, what happens to people who can't pay child support or alimony?

Corruptions, lawyers and judges conspiring to squeeze folks.

Damn.

The headline got my attention, because it is correct, and this was not a case of going to jail for a debt, but for contempt of court, that is, failure to appear.

That's where I stopped reading. After a discrepancy that great, no writer has a claim on my attention.

Well, if you don't go to court...

However this is still a heavy handed tactic that shouldn't be done.

This is FAKE NEWS. They went to jail for failing to appear in court:

“ Tres Biggs went to jail for failing to appear in court for unpaid medical bills. “

He did NOT go to jail for unpaid medical bills. CBS is lying (as usual).

They don’t have an unequal burden JUST FOR BEING POOR. They have an equal burden. They were treated “as if” they were actual, responsible, citizens. I reject your bigotry of low expectations.

These people made a promise to appear in court then did not show up. That is crime. You can argue what the penalty for that crime ought to be, it doesn’t change the fact that this headline was FAKE NEWS.

Sorry, if I had 1000’s in debt I was choosing not to pay off, a few minutes in court once every three months doesn’t sound like a huge “sacrifice” to me.

“No I haven’t paid this, and I don’t intend to. Whomever took the time to nurse me back to health can just shove these bills up their ass. Why should I pay them for their time and efforts?”

See how that works out for you. Sad that we live in a world where so many are so eager to shirk their responsibilities.

Goes weirdly third person. Check. Resorts to name calling. Check. Makes entire post without even bothering to reference the original topic. Check. Calls anyone who presents an alternate viewpoint a troll or shill. Check.

You need your safe space. Some place where “rich” can mean “bad guy” and “debt” means “something someone else should pay for”. Unfortunately, you are in reality now.

You should find a Bernie Sanders or AOC website somewhere. You’ll fit in much better there with others who have failed in every way at life.

Horribly inaccurate title but what's going on here is pretty fucked up and I doubt it's legal or it wouldn't only exist in this one Kansas backwash.

Lawyer concocts scheme to enrich himself off poor people struggling to pay medical bills and convinces local judge to implement his scheme.

No law was passed, it's just a scheme by this judge and lawyer.

I wouldn't doubt this judge is getting a kickback and if he is him and the lawyer belong in jail.
