The tradition of men not getting physical with women is due to the fact that it isn't a fair fight. No woman is honestly going to beat a grown man in a physical fight, it's like saying "why can't a man retaliate when a child attacks him". You can defend yourself, restrain your attacker or use a light level of force in return, but issuing a beatdown to someone who is much weaker than you is seen to be in bad taste. It is one of the remnants of actual chivalry which has made it down into the modern day.
That being said, women should act like ladies and not punch people -- obviously. That woman needs some help if she thinks assaulting complete strangers is okay. She's lucky this man was a stand up guy and didn't just clean her clock in return.

No this is a retarded unwritten rule. You should never hit anyone period, but if a woman thanks she’s man enough to strike a man then she should be man enough to accept what’s coming. If she wants to act like a man then it should be ok to be treated like one. Also she should be treated just the same as a man when it comes to the law. If she started this she should get just as much jail time as a man. And we all know 99.9% of the time they just get a slap on the wrist.

There is also the fact that if you do hit a woman, especially out in public, there are dozens of beta males waiting around to defend ma'lady from harm in the hopes she would sleep with him later.
Doesn't matter how strong you are, you can't fight 10 guys at once who are desperate to get laid.
