People may think those who dislike Starbucks' crappy coffee don't know what "real" espresso is, but Starbucks actually admitted they deliberately burn their beans so they stay "fresher" (if that's what they insist on calling that taste) for the long transits to all their shops spread all over the globe (Really Italy? France? Starbucks? Are you guys serious?!)
If you enjoy coffee, and have experimented with various methods of making it -- French press, pour over, Turkish, moka pot, etc -- you know there are a couple hard and fast rules for making a great cup: 1) grind the beans just before making the coffee and 2) DON'T BURN THE BEANS/GROUNDS*. So YES! Starbucks coffee is atrocious. I've made cups of Folgers that taste better! Folgers doesn't burn their damned beans!
*Water that is too hot (boiling) will burn the grounds, and your coffee will taste almost as bad as Starbucks.
i can see how eliminating as much moisture as possible from the beans might make them last longer, but at the price of overcooking the oils and oxidizing them, which changes their flavor. If you want to go all out, you can roast your own. There is no better smell in the world. You can roast your own in a cast iron, a popcorn popper, or a mini-roaster you can buy online for like 100 bucks that sits on your countertop. Ordering single origin green beans is often cheaper by the pound, and you can get way better quality beans... for instance sulawesi beans, mocha beans, peaberry beans that are way better than what you can get from a major retailer.
