It's getting so bad...It's just a slow death march. It's much more effective to keep people getting used to a slightly worse reality...but when you look back things are significantly shittier than they used to be. Hell, that's how they got Jews to board trains to concentration camps. Not that I'm comparing Reddit to Nazi Germany in any meaningful sense, just saying that's a tactic you use to condition people into things they wouldn't normally accept.
