I am a college student and I have 7 liberal roomates. They are for the most part pretty civil but they do tend to just call out subjects and start grilling me on why I think things.
I have never really been one for discussing politics. I like capitalism, I know that government slows things down when it starts to try and control the economy (e.g. every true socialist countries history of economic blunders) but over the last 5 years of highschool and community college I have been forced to decide and start taking a stance. But I’m finding that I don’t know a lot about specifics or have a ton of sources to defend myself with.
Specifically with: immigration (why not give them amnesty and then just tax them?)
Why not tax the rich? (Minimum wage is a scam and we can’t live off of it- so tax the rich to help us through social programs)
And Trump rigged his trial (It was super shady and he is trying to hide that he pushed Ukraine to investigate Biden)
Any help would be greatly appreciated. This sub has been awesome to read.

Voting 2020 because these people scare me and Trump is standing up to them. They are bullies and he’s trying to take them on.

This too will pass and every minute of your college life you spend talking about this is a minute you didn't spend doing what you are in college to do. Wave them off in a vaguely friendly way and go back to the library or your lab or corner a professor and get instruction and network.
You are not obligated to straighten out other people.
Remarks: Trump spent a half billion of his own money on his first campaign. Not the action of a guy who at age 70 was in it for the money. He doesn't make a nickel until he makes that back. In only four years. Not a great business deal.
For Trump to pull strings in Ukraine to make Biden look bad, Trump, the incumbent, with all the advantage that comes with being the incumbent, from name recognition to a job performance we can see and don't have to imagine, would first have to feel concern about Biden as a rival for the 2020 election. Does that pass the common sense test?
Immigration: why should Americans compete for jobs with others? And why is it good to siphon off good workers from other countries?
Tax the rich? The rich pay most of the taxes and half the country pays no federal tax. State and local, maybe, and certainly sales tax, but no federal income tax. Look it up.
Women? Trump was a twice divorced man and made a crude remark in private fifteen years ago. He apologized immediately when it came out. In his hotel and entertainment businesses, he has employed countless young women, and there are no complaints. Kelly Ann Conway was the first woman to run a successful presidential campaign, Trump's.
Minimum wage leads to kiosks. Lost jobs.
Black people? Lowest unemployment ever, and the prison reform act.
Gays? Trump tried and failed to make that not be illegal in other countries as it is, in many. No transsexuals in the US military? You aren't allowed in the military for any medical condition that may cost money, not even flat feet or iffy hearing or eyesight. They are spending enough on the soldier, they don't want the tiniest medical condition.
Abortion? Still settled law, and likely to stay that way, but perhaps getting harder to obtain. Yes that might be the only real issue they have. It's not a perfect world so there might be some real conflict over that.
But you don't have to say anything to anybody about anything. Ever. Except at home and in court but these people aren't your relatives.

Seconded. A quick test is to ask them, "If I proved to you that President Trump is best for this country, would you accept it and vote for him this fall?" 95% of the time they will indicate "no". Odds are, you have more useful and productive things to do with your time.

Also, for the immigration question. Granting amnesty to these ppl who have come in illegally gives them the right to import as many "family members" as they want, then those family members can import more family members who can.... see the pattern? You grant amnesty to the current millions and you'll get at least 5 times as many ppl.
Dude. They have given them all amnesty. In the 80’s I think? What did that solve? Nothing! Build a big beautiful wall, so that people can no longer sneak in, and amnesty could be an option. Until then, it’s just a bunch of cheaters cutting in line and keeping well-deserving people out of our country. It’ll continue on until the wall is built.
The rich are taxed. Quite a bit. I have no grudge against people who did well. But you can tax the rich 100% and it doesn’t really solve our budget problems. And they’d just find more tax loopholes. So if you want to raise the top bracket slightly, fine, go ahead, but it won’t fix our deficits. This is just a modern day demon that’s been created.
Obama shipped $300,000,000 in actual pallets of cash to Iran in the middle of the night. The Iranians boarded the plane, verified the cash was there, then immediately (and I do mean immediately) released 5 US citizens (or some number) that they were holding hostage to us. It’s against the law to pay for hostages. But Obama did it anyway. Trump didn’t break any laws. And how could it be against the law to try and determine if the previous VP was corrupt? Even Adam Schiff conceded that at a minimum it looked shady. If it looks shady, you can’t really fault the guy for wanting it looked into, can you? Trump didn’t ‘rig’ anything. The evidence is gathered by the house. They could have subpoenaed Bolton, etc., but they chose not to. If your roommates want to fault anything, they should fault a lousy sham rushed impeachment effort by the house. I personally don’t think it looks so great for Trump to have done that, but it’s not anywhere near an impeachable offense. The bar must be set high, or every President from no on will be impeached.
