My god, the insufferable squawking and whining from the presstitutes actually made a killer virus seem preferable by comparison.

Sounded like the answer was to develop the antiviral medication over the vaccination. CDC or someone said the antiviral should be available in about one month. I think they are testing it now.

My mom's theory: this coronavirus panic is a distraction/false flag to divert people's attention from whatever shit the left is trying to pull.

3
MakeHempGreatAgain 3 points ago +3 / -0

Unfortunately, that is wishful thinking/optimism bias. Not all threats are conjured up by the left for the purpose of manipulation.

1
sun_wolf 1 point ago +2 / -1

And in two months if America isn’t a World War Z-style apocalyptic wasteland, will you acknowledge that once again everyone fell for another FAKE NEWS hysteria?

1
MakeHempGreatAgain 1 point ago +1 / -0

No, because no one serious is making such dire claims.

People like myself are simply warning that this is not a non-issue. Problems can be small or they can be world ending, or they can fall somewhere in between. Too many pedes are combining optimism bias with (baseless) conspiracy theory in effort to hand wave the pandemic away. Instead of pretending like anyone has a firm grasp of how the next few months will play out, we should all make sure we have emergency supplies to make it through a worst-case scenario.

1
prawnexodus 1 point ago +2 / -1

I agree, the coronavirus mass hysteria is all too convenient for the globalist agenda for my liking.

I’ve heard China has a clause in the trade deal that if they are hit with a pandemic, their side of the deal is no longer binding and goes up for renegotiation. China is asshole. Would it be beyond them to hoax this to get out of a deal they signed? And stop the Hong Kong protests? And have immunity to round up dissenters? And force every other country to take a trade hit alongside them? And try to hurt Trump in an election year?

If this isn’t a hoax, then it’s mighty convenient how well it worked out for the Chinese Communist Party.

1
MakeHempGreatAgain 1 point ago +1 / -0

Not sure how you come to the conclusion that this has worked out well for the CCP...

2
Pede 2 points ago +3 / -1

I don't know, that's just the way China does things. They have a collectivist culture, and on top of it they have cities packed full of more people than we can even conceive of. It leads to extremely controlling moves like this, just on the basis that maybe it's a good idea just to be safe.

2
MakeHempGreatAgain 2 points ago +2 / -0

You're really reaching there. In no timeline does it make sense for the CCP to destroy their own economy just to hurt Trump. They're diabolical - not stupid.

More likely they intended to release this virus on American soil, and it escaped the Wuhan virology lab due to incompetence. Anyone still thinking covid-19 is not a threat is uninformed or naive.

https://thedonald.win/p/468KH3L/anyone-seen-this-stuff-from-wuha/

1
sun_wolf 1 point ago +1 / -0

But if their economy was already in collapse, and it seems it was, then a small additional hit to themselves while also knocking down every other market around the world would be a quick and fairly effective way to level the playing field. Plus it stopped the Hong Kong protests.

1
MakeHempGreatAgain 1 point ago +1 / -0

This is not a 'small additional hit,' this is possibly death blow. They were slowly sliding toward the cliff because of Trump's tariffs. In shutting down their entire economy as they did, they basically took a running leap over the edge.

The Chinese are not like radical muslims - they don't see suicide as a viable strategy. The CCP would never sacrifice this kind of money unless they had no other choice. Meaning the virus threat is 100% real.

1
Pede 1 point ago +1 / -0

???

I didn't suggest the Chinese are trying to hurt their economy at all.

1
MakeHempGreatAgain 1 point ago +1 / -0

Maybe I misunderstood. You refuted hoffytown, who stated the virus must be a serious threat because of the way China has sacrificed their economy in order to fight it.

I'm not sure what other point you were trying to make. But China most definitely prioritizes trade dollars over human lives. They would never give up so much money "just to be safe." The CCP halted their economy because workers were dropping like flies and they knew if things got worse there would be no one to work in the factories.

11
MAGA_MEXICAN_CHILI 11 points ago +12 / -1

Its real but as I pointed out before, the numbers are conflated. There's some things we need to account for with China.

  1. Majority of their population is poorly nourished (Unable to eat well = lower immunity)
  2. They are communists
  3. They are still developing. Even if Wuhan has a major bio-facility. The infrastructure of the area is poor.

Now we can understand the numbers, China can quarantine and if they chose to, use Napalm to just bake the virus out. Wuhan would cease to exist (The Russians did the same thing back in the 50's when a pandemic started to spread). They cant so the next option is to choke it, anyone suspected of being sick will be killed (unless you're part of the party). Three all this does is prove that Trump is correct on trade and bringing jobs back to the US. Once we reduce our dependence on China by 60% we'll be in a better position.

Its being played up directly because of that, if people start realizing that our supply chain is tied to China. Questions will arise as to "If this happens again, will we be able to have life go on as normal?" The answer is no and there will be a push in the next 10 years to reduce foreign dependence on cheap goods.

My take:

The only reason the coronavirus hysteria is being pushed in the media is to fuck with the Trump economy. The rate of deaths is not much higher than from any other flu. So far, the number of infections worldwide is less than 100,000. 30,000,000 people in the US alone had the flu this flu season, and about 30,000 died from it. So far we've got 57 coronavirus cases in the US, with 0, ZERO deaths.

On average in the US, over 200,000 people are hospitalized each year from the flu, and 36,000 die. We're already past peak flu season this year. In another month the coronavirus will be the Comet Khoutek of flus.

How many other times has the CDC cried wolf? Remember Swine Flu? Bird Flu? For the CDC, it's all about getting those multi billion dollar 'emergency' funding bills through Congress.

Did I mention that Nancy Messonnier, MD, the Director of the Center for the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, is Rod Rosenstein's sister?

11
anotherviewpoint 11 points ago +11 / -0

You are both correct as well as incorrect fellow pede. The Coronavirus is serious in that it spreads easier than the common flu. 20 percent or so will get the "serious" version. Out of that, only 38.5% will live according to the numbers on Lancet. From the ages of 60-69 the death rate is 3%...for 80+ its far, far higher.

The chances of re-infection are greater than regular flu. The virus may be airborne as an aeorsol...of course surfaces, detected in urine as well as fecael gases. (Think explosive diarrhea.)

Whether summer months will see the disappearance of the Coronavirus remains to be seen. Outbreaks in Desert regions as well as Singapore indicate maybe not.

The issue is serious...but no need to panic. Preparations and common sense protocols will protect most of us.

13
flyover_deplorable 13 points ago +13 / -0

From my understanding, what really sets this apart from the flu we encounter every year (other than it being a man made bio weapon) is that it is not seasonal. Typically we see the flu die off as the weather warms. However, with this virus, it will stick around. Essentially giving us a year round flu bug.

5
skygz 5 points ago +5 / -0

It's different from the flu because our immune systems are not good at countering it, and our current antivirals (e.g. Tamiflu) are ineffective. It's also particularly adept at entering cells, much moreso than SARS.

11
Mrsattorney 11 points ago +11 / -0

I heard Dr. Anthony Fauci (NIH) several days ago say that the Coronavirus may well dissipate when the weather warms this Spring, but that is an untested hypothesis, as of yet. He went on to say that it is not an unreasonable hypothesis based on other flu-type viruses which are seasonal, we just don't know yet.

9
HrvyWnstnDdntKllHmsf 9 points ago +9 / -0

The fact that it has managed to spread in Singapore, where it is never cold (they’re practically on the equator) doesn’t really support this though.

5
lcburgundy 5 points ago +5 / -0

It hasn't exactly spread like wildfire in the very densely populated Singapore either the way it did in temperate wintertime Wuhan. No doubt this has been due to preventive measures too, but Singapore was among the very first countries with imported cases from China and they have yet to hit 100 cases, locally transmitted or imported, over a month later. Coronaviruses are known not to transmit or survive well in tropical environments or during seasonal summers. (That doesn't mean you won't see some local spread even in summer in the US, but there's solid science saying it will be attenuated.)

11
DanIsSwell 11 points ago +11 / -0

This was also left totally unchecked (covered up) in China, for over a month, and allowed to run rampant. Couple that with terrible air pollution/lung damage, overcrowding, and not so great public hygiene practices, and yeah, we can see why China was effected so badly. The way it spread there, is not an example of how it will spread in America. But, I would like to see more travel restrictions, just to be totally safe.

Just want to point out the CDC has only tested 500 people. You can check that on the CDC website. They only report cases that CDC testing has confirmed. Over a week ago the CDC rolled out a plan to include coronavirus testing in routine flu surveillance in several major cities, and I think there's also some state and local authorities they will be working with, but that has been delayed due to a problem with the approved CDC test http://archive.is/Figap. So, the CDC is not reporting results of any widespread surveillance as of yet.

The nation’s public health laboratories, exasperated by the malfunctioning tests in the face of a global public health emergency, have taken the unusual step of appealing to the Food and Drug Administration for permission to develop and use their own tests. In Hawaii, authorities are so alarmed about the lack of testing ability that they requested permission from the CDC to use tests from Japan. A medical director at a hospital laboratory in Boston is developing an in-house test, but is frustrated that his laboratory won’t be able to use it without going through an onerous and time-consuming review process, even if demand surges.

There is testing and quarantining of suspected cases being done at the hospital level:

“A lot of hospitals are trying to do something similar, which is get a test up and running on an instrument, get it validated in-house,” Mina said. “I think all of us are coming to the same realization that we can’t do anything as long as this remains under the control of CDC and state labs.”

Bottom line, the virus is almost certainly spreading in the US, given the volume of travel between the US and China before the travel ban, but the federal government hasn't yet made official testing widely available or given the go-ahead for independent tests.

I don't know if that is the message the President should have given today, or what he should have said instead if anything, but I'm confused about the emphasis on "only 15 cases".

deleted 6 points ago +7 / -1

Stormysrectalseepage 6 points ago +7 / -1

How would it turn into a situation like that when we have cut off all travel from China and quarintened the ones who had it?

People said "oh this is gonna hit the fan, this is gonna hit the fan, after Valentine's day it'll hit the fan".....well shouldn't we have 100s of cases by now?

Of the other cases, many came off the Japanese cruise ship and the only person who didnt come from China who got it was a spouse who got it from a person who went to China.

Look at how people in South Korea live compared to us. They have conditions that allow it to easily spread.

8
UltimaThule2014MU69 8 points ago +8 / -0

They haven't tested. It's easy to not report any cases if there's no testing.

There's reason to think it won't hit the US as hard. Everyone in China has smoker's lung due to the crazy pollution there, on top of the 60% of men who smoke. That's going to up the severity. They obviously live in dense cities with lots of public transport, which ups the transmission.

But this thing has an incubation period of up to weeks. Consider how many Chinese students and others came back to the US in late January after CNY holidays. Consider that there's like 7000 people on average who prior to the ban flew from China every day. Consider that US citizens returning were still only under voluntary quarantine. If any of those people start seeding clusters, we could have a bunch of cases that look like severe flu but aren't. Since there's been minimal surveillance testing, we don't know what the picture looks like on a national level.

1
Stormysrectalseepage 1 point ago +2 / -1

And we've had 15 cases for a couple weeks. Why arent those numbers greater?

6
UltimaThule2014MU69 6 points ago +7 / -1

Because they haven't been testing. That's literally what I've been saying in each of my comments.

0
Stormysrectalseepage 0 points ago +1 / -1

So they got to 15 cases and they stopped testing people?

Word is there is 57 cases now. Which still isnt even bad if nobody has died.

If its already here and with a 2 percent death rate...why has nobody died from it? Do they not do an autopsy when you die?

They came back in late January...its been 4 weeks. Incubation period is 2 weeks...hmmm or did they change it to 4 weeks now to up the fear mongering?

2
UltimaThule2014MU69 2 points ago +2 / -0

They've tested 500. These are probably most people who came into contact with early confirmed cases, as in people who flew in to the US from Wuhan with symptoms when they arrived, or the people on the diplomatic evacuation flights. They have not yet set up any sort of broad-based sampling of people with flu symptoms or anything like that. In part because as I said about 2 weeks ago now the CDC sent out a faulty test, and so no testing recognized by the CDC has been done by outside surveillance centers until now. I'm not sure if that has been sorted out, it may have been. In which case we will start to see the testing numbers rise.

WaPo just reported a case in NorCal with no travel history and no known exposure to a known infected. I don't know what criteria got this patient's test qualified to be among the few verified by the CDC to be reported, or whether it is purely California's state health dept doing their own testing or what, but I think it's a safe bet we'll see more of that. I mean, imagine not having already been screening LA, SF, or NYC? Who knows what's been going on there.

Edit: here's the story on the patient

You can't identify a novel coronavirus from an autopsy... It's literally strands of RNA. They don't have functional tests, so no one knows. Based on how it is spreading at rates much higher than the flu it's going to be everywhere soon.

7

It will never hit more than a couple thousand cases and a dozen deaths in the US. Flu season is already ending. By June no one will remember CV.

5
kmillz 5 points ago +7 / -2

This is a reckless assumption. Are you not even paying attention to Italy, Iran and South Korea? The only reason our numbers are so low is because we aren't doing any testing and they are. We've tested ~500 people out of easily 10s or hundreds of thousands of people who have traveled here from those countries.

1
Stormysrectalseepage 1 point ago +2 / -1

And how many people have been dying?

If a person dies, do they not perform an autopsy? Well if somebody had died from coronavirus in the US, we'd have known about it by now.

So no plans for more testing? Unbelievable. Of course there's only 15 cases if we've only tested 500 people. You mean to tell me we've only had 500 people fly into the United States from China, Italy and South Korea this month??

No I am not a concern troll. I understand that the President should be saying the right things to not panic people.
