It began in the 90's with forcing everyone to say "his or hers" instead of just "his".

Nobody is taught anymore that in English and other Germanic and Romance languages the "masculine" is gender-neutral and the "feminine" is honorific.

That's why prized possessions are referred to in the feminine and people or things of unknown gender are referred to as "he."
