Yeah, I only noticed because there was some conversation I had recently on Reddit (I think in the college football section), where someone linked to a medical journal advocating for using that phrase in place of "committed suicide". It's semantics, but I can't imagine someone close to killing themselves would be convinced not to do so based on some simple verbiage like that, but what do I know.
