The easiest thing in the world, seems to me, is to fly to the extreme, never question your own views or comment 'publicly' with anything questionable (trying to get feedback and looking for correction), and just judge and hate everyone to the Left... or Right... of whatever your position is.
Basically, just aim for "more, more, more" of whatever side you're on.
This is also the quickest way to arrive at a literal civil war in the US.
It's a natural consequence of online communities. In normal face-to-face interactions, you are incentivized to be reasonable and agreeable. In anonymous online interactions, you are incentivized to be extreme.
"How did we not see this coming?", is... an important question that never seems to get enough focus.
