I wish they'd read a book. Sweden's wealth was created during their capitalist period, roughly 1870 through the 1950s. Their welfare state began in the 60s, and devastated their economy until they rolled back much of it in the 90s. Its been creeping it way back, but at no point in the modern history of Sweden have they ever been socialist.
Euro nations that have flirted with socialism have always ended up rolling it back after the economic disaster becomes too big to ignore. The UK elected Clement Attlee after WW2, who nationalized the UK's major industries. By Thatcher, they'd rolled almost all of that back save for the NHS.
Every time a Euro nation flirts with Socialism, its a disaster, and they retreat from it a decade or so later.
the whole reason it worked is because in Scandinavia they were a small, homogenous, tight-knit population. A high trust society with low crime. It's like a big extended family. And it was sold as a "social safety net" , it was not sold as "Fuck the rich we deserve their money!"
When you invite in a ton of freeloaders to leech off it, No one wants to pay for them to have a free ride.
Trust me their entire "Socialist" system is going to collapse because of how many migrants they let in. People in scandinavia are pissed off. They're not happy that there are thousands and thousands of muslims who never work, pump out 10 kids, and get free housing free healthcare and a salary paid by taxpayers. This is why the Anti-Migration party Sweden Democrats is rising in the polls. This is why Denmark shut down their border with Sweden. Those social programs can only work in a homogenous, high trust society.
Also i've talked to people from denmark, their system is not as amazing as the democrats wants you to believe, They use every trick in the book to make it sound better. For example democrats claim they only work 35 hour work weeks, it's a lie, they do 40. They take averages and since you're not paid for lunch they count that as not a 40 hour work week. Also they had policies where you have to work and you are not eligible for benefits unless you paid into them.
My wife is from the Philippines, but she's a PhD and has traveled to Europe for conferences and the like. She was disgusted by the status of the cities, she's afraid to go there now, and I don't blame her.
Europe has become a big shithole because of this and the people are starting to really talk about it... but it's too late.
