There are already statistics on this because it is a well known virus in the medical world. It is known since textbook med school to all physicians.

If there was some respiratory disease you'd want the government and people to pay attention to, then adhere to the flu vaccine. It's not very successful but it's your best bet to not be 1 of 80,000 annual deaths in a year due to influenza.
