Many large companies were already rethinking their reliance on the Chinese supply chains and considering moving their production away from mainland China before this happened. The virus has only accelerated those changes and caused many more to make the move.
The biggest beneficiary of all of this will likely be Mexico thanks to the USMCA that was signed recently. They have all the qualities a manufacturing hub country needs and are already a formidable manufacturer in many industries.
Considering the fact that we have a free trade agreement in place with Mexico already, coupled with the fact that it takes a shipping container an average of 5 days to get to the US from Mexico, as opposed to 21 days average transit between just Shanghai and the port of Los Angeles, means Mexico is uniquely positioned to see a massive increase in manufacturing and GDP over the next ten years or so.
That is a huge win for us I think in that it strengthens a neighbor in our region, as opposed to a global rival hell bent on destroying us.
I think you will see a lot of manufacturing return to the states if they can make the numbers work.
What I want to see is an attack on the barriers of hiring people. I want to see less costs for employing people as opposed to buying things. It is so expensive to have an employee these days. The government needs to help spur hiring by removing some of the costs to those that are providing the actual job. Until we do that I don't think we will see a ton of manufacturing jobs come back to this country and frankly, having seen the numbers many times, I can't blame them.
