Years ago, a friend attended a debate between a local rabbi, RC priest, Protestant pastor (I know, I know; sounds like an old joke involving a bar is coming) and (in)famous Atheist, Madeleine Murray O'Hare. My friend told me that at one point, I believe it was the priest, challenged Ms. O'Hare, "If Jesus isn't God, then you should have no trouble saying 'Jesus is Lord'."
The audience watched in amazement as Ms. O'Hare struggled to get the "meaningless" profession of faith out of her mouth; in the end, breathless and beet red, she finally gave up and stood behind her podium seething with rage. My friend, a Catholic (I'm Protestant) was in stunned awe as she gave me her eyewitness account.
Perhaps, this "thing" of Mr. Biden's is the result of a somewhat similar attitude toward God as Madeleine Murray O'Hare's. I don't know that for sure, of course! But it's funny to me how my friend's story leapt to mind as soon as I read what Mr. Biden said.
