Your link says that's false. Theft below $950 was reduced from felony to misdemeanor 5 years ago, which still carries serious consequences. Cops choose not to respond. Merchants know this.
Further, even if somebody DID have a legal weapon, it wouldn't be legal to use it to stop someone unless it were a felony. (I think that's correct, but I'm not a lawyer and don't even play one on TV)

Turning it into a misdemeanor wasn't the problem. The problem was then the police were told not to enforce laws for petty or nonviolent offenses. That particular change happened about a year ago IIRC.

What happens when the lawless are allowed to run rampant for too long? People will either take the law into their own hands or flock to those who will. The best thing I can see happening is people exercising their 2nd amendment rights despite Cuckifornia trying to stop them. Worst case is that organized crime starts offering protection where the police have failed to do so.

It is less getting arrested and more getting fired. Stores don't care about 100 people shoplifting vs one employee getting workmans comp for an injury stopping them.

This would be a felony if it's over $950. But most the time, when police get to the business that was just victimized the manager or employees will refuse to sign paperwork stating they want prosecution against the suspects. In that case it means there is no crime and police will take no action. Lots of victims are pussies in CA and will say they don't want to be victims.
And sometimes an employee will sign, we will arrest/cite and then later the employee will get in trouble for requesting prosecution. Like when Starbucks had police remove people for tresspass and then tried to blame the police afterwards when we are only acting at their request.

Same thing in Las Vegas. I was in the checkout line at the Walgreens by Venetian, and a guy just walked in grabbed 2 boxes of donuts, and walked out the door past a security guy.
I was hoping security would stop him and get a glimpse of something interesting. But nope. When i got to the cashier I asked if she saw, and asked why security didn't stop him, and she said they aren't allowed to stop shop lifters
Yep. Seen this in person on two occasions. The thieves aren't worried because they know nothing will happen. The Walgreens at California and Sacramento gets hit regularly. I've spoken to the store manager. He says the police are completely unresponsive. It's a cost of doing business. Anything you purchase in that store (and many others in SF) are simply funding theft. Even if the police caught and arrested them, the new DA, Chesa Boudin would simply let them go.
Anyone feel like a shopping trip? Just think of all the places you could hit up for around $900 of free shit. Totally be worth the flight to Cali. Not sure about the chance of picking up a disease in the street, but definitely the flight.
