I went over to r/politics and was pretty surprised of the number of "as a European" comments. Like I trust/care about their perception of American politics they get from Reddit.

I see that stuff from Canadians too. You saying “as a European” makes me disregard your opinion more than anything. We don’t want to be like Europe or Canada. That’s the whole point. Like we give a shit about what other countries think. You don’t hear poor people from poor countries talking about how they dreamed of one day being able to go to Canada or Ireland. They want to come here because we’re the best. All these “as a Europeans” can suck on a fatty.

It's a caveat, not an expression of smug superiority. Replace European, Canadian, east coastie with idiot and their comments make more sense.
