I think they are known in the political blood sport as "straw candidates." Put in not to win, but to draw votes away from the strongest of the opposition. There is at least one Senate seat today won that way, Democrat. They will go into a conservative stronghold and produce an issue candidate, say abortion or 2A, who will then draw votes away from the conservative running. The giveaway is often huge advertising from seemingly out of nowhere. Very hard tactic to defend against.
