Last time around, The_Donald gave the Bernouts a warm and forgiving welcome. And some of them helped elect DJT. That was smart.
Bernie has ONE issue, and he is STILL the only one talking about it, namely the insane cost of a college education. I do not have to support loan forgiveness to notice that the costs are out of control.
Better yet tie loans to their wages after they graduate. Give em a percentage of their wages for say like 10 years. They would stop giving people loans for useless degrees. And work extra hard to ensure they are prepared to get a good paying job after they get out.
This is the answer. Before loans are distributed a major has to be declared, and you’re capped at a certain percentage of that profession’s average annual income. So if you’re going into gender studies, you cap out at $20K total aid toward your degree, while engineers and scientists would cap at like $100-120K.
If you want more money, then pick a different major. That would be a good indicator of how much people should expect to make in their professions as well, so they can “shop” for one that pays better, before getting a four-year degree in underwater basket weaving.
It does not even have to be that draconian. We can lower the cost of books by having the professors make them available online. We can prune the curriculum and get rid of professors whose real function is political activism. We can remove the incentives for schools to build resort-style living into the (required) on-campus housing. We can allow students to take advantage of online classes.
College teacher here, totally agree. Tuition is high, but the real scam is all of the extra fees for housing, parking, etc. It's ridiculous. My school used to be smallish, but then there was a big push about ten years ago to build the resort-style living you refer to. Those dorms are nicer than any apartment I've ever lived in! And parking in the nice parking garages is over $500/year, no exaggeration. The kids who commute come out ok, but the ones who live on-campus are kind of screwed.
And yeah, book prices are so stupid. My area actually switched textbooks for my classes solely so it wouldn't be so expensive (and for some classes we encourage them to get digital copies if they want, though the digital doesn't work for other classes) and I give my students as much material as possible for free (posted online or printed out) but that's about all we can do. The textbook companies set their prices to be so retardedly high
You should not be able to get a federally backed student loan for a lesbian dance theory major.
How about we suspend the interest for 10-15 years. If they cant pay it off in that amount of time, well, they only have themselves to blame.
Plus cutting useless degrees and the profs that teach them along with any core program forcing folks to take these classes. This is the core issue, cost. Big education is a lot bigger than big oil, big pharma, or anything else these asshats vilify.

I don’t want to pay for some spoiled, dumb shits college debt, that they chose to sign up for.

You can't work with people who want you dead. Nothing to be gained in talking with them either in my experience.
