There really isn’t even a “thing” as a user count. People are here clicking on links. Maybe they are still here, and reading a clicked article, maybe they’ve moved on, and are now doing sudoku puzzles. You don’t really know. So a “count” is just something along the lines of how many unique visitors you’ve had in “x” amount of time (say 15 minutes for “current users”). I’d rather see the number of unique visitors in the past 24 hours, if they showed us anything. It’s a much better indicator of the overall interest in the site, without being dependent on the time of day.

With everyone complaining about the fudged numbers on the DomReddit, you would think the admins would have wanted that incorporated as a way to bolster morale or something.
It would be nice to have, at least, a counter for current site visitors. Like unique IP's or something like that.
I'm on the fence about saying "worthless" or not. I definitely think we could carry more weight with news outlets if they see how many active users there are. I would agree that if there isn't a numerical counter for that sort of thing, it does lessen the pull this site has, in a way. But this is basically the only way some people get accurate news, so I'm not sure the lack of a single feature makes the site pointless to have.
