Thing was, he actually bought the ice cream after he licked it. He just did that to get some likes on social media. Unfortunately, Walmart had to dump all their Blue Bell, and he ended up having to reimburse them, pay Blue Bell for the damage to their reputation, and pulled some jail time. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
If he licked it before he bought it, realistically its still stealing. You are consuming the product before you purchase it. Plus he incited fear which led to damages you mentioned.
i dont think consuming a product before checking out while inside the store is stealing.
its only stealing if you leave the premise and dont pay.
sometimes i get a drink on the way into the store while shopping inside and pay for it on the way out. for a weekly grocery trip that may take an hr thats the best logistics.
Personally, I feel like its stealing, since you haven't paid for it yet, so its not yours. However, this is completely ignored if people know you have the intention to pay for it.
I'm not saying it's enough or not but I do know our justice systems are so fucked up that there can be a broad range of sentences for the same fucking crime therefore 20 years is something. We let people off for murder all the time because they have mental issues or suffered a temporary breakdown. I guess my point is people have done much less time for much harsher crimes.

Posting online was not good because of what happened, but I am not a thief if I drink a coke in line...

Then he is even dumber than I thought
Of course he is.
At least he has some sense, I guess. What kind of people did he think he was going to impress?
Oh there's a whole cult of idiots on the interweb that think this shit is hilarious.
Tide-Pod eaters.
(Do I win a prize?)
Who's that?
Didn't Slager get 20 years in jail?

Be a cop driving a cruiser while drunk and murder and injure people, then while awaiting trial, hit a mailbox and get another DUI in the meantime. Do 4 years and walk free. https://www.theindychannel.com/news/local-news/former-impd-officer-convicted-of-killing-motorcyclist-while-driving-drunk-is-released-from-prison
$1,500 does not come close to the cost incurred by Walmart & Blue Bell for this stunt. Which in turn gets spread out to every other consumer.
30 days in jail, 2 years in prison, $2500 fine ... We need to start getting more creative with our judicial punishment system
