I'm not a felon but I had gotten some of the most comical felonies over the years.
Once for returning an item under false pretenses "Hi can I have this $30 item on a gift card?" And I got several felonies for that. But you can sneak into the US and get a fucking misdemeanor.
They overcharge you with the expectation you will plead down. Happened to me numerous times. Once the pigs were trying to file charges the next day over some bogus petty crimes and the DA told them to stop.
Was my first charge and I was just drunk and dumb and these scumbag pigs kept trying to pile on.
That's absolutely absurd. It shows that the legal system is classful; i.e. classes of one group versus another for which the punishments differ dramatically.
It's one of the reasons why I think our drug laws (as an example) are damaging toward society. Rather than being rehabilitative, they're too narrowly focused on punitive measures that do nothing to help the victims of drug abuse, namely addicts.
Yet, like you said, much more heinous crimes that have very real, material impacts on the economy and people's lives are quietly swept under the rug...

How do you get several felonies for one act? Wouldn't the store just say "no" if it were illegal?
Just trying to figure out how that happens.
Yep. Throwing out 10 charges in hopes 1 or more stick by the time it's all over.

How does that even work? Attempted wire fraud for trying to get an item return on a gift card?
"Obtaining property under false pretenses. Class H felony"
For what is tantamount to shoplifting.
But if you attack someone in a bar and might kill them, or sneak into the US, just misdemeanors.
