For what is tantamount to shoplifting.

But if you attack someone in a bar and might kill them, or sneak into the US, just misdemeanors.

That's absolutely absurd. It shows that the legal system is classful; i.e. classes of one group versus another for which the punishments differ dramatically.

It's one of the reasons why I think our drug laws (as an example) are damaging toward society. Rather than being rehabilitative, they're too narrowly focused on punitive measures that do nothing to help the victims of drug abuse, namely addicts.

Yet, like you said, much more heinous crimes that have very real, material impacts on the economy and people's lives are quietly swept under the rug...
