Not true. The cruise ships have been ideal samples as they have a known number of people on them and it is quite easy to test a large percentage of the sample.
The death rate for the cruise ships has been about 2%. So there isn't some huge number on the ships who haven't been tested.
Last I checked for the diamond princess Cruise there were ~800 confirmed cases of covid-19 and 7 deaths. Since no one seems to want to report how many were on the cruise I’m going to assume 3000 based on the ships capacity. That gives an infection rate of ~27% with a death rate of 1%.
Now I wouldn’t imagine cruises are representative of the general population, in fact I bet they skew heavily towards retired age. Just a quick search shows ~50% 50 and older. The issue I’m seeing is these death rate of the flu are being thrown out from the general population but the corona virus numbers are being cited from non age corrected data. You can’t apply the death rate of coronavirus in a long term care facility or cruise to the general public as they are different populations of one of the most important factors in that death rate.
You might be right but the current death rate is still higher than that of the flu. No matter what statistics you look at, I agree though it might not be as bad as people say.
