A lot of the Never Trump style conservatives (the Cruz guys, the libertarians, the Romney types) are actually just super gullible when it comes to the left. They fall for everything the TV says. Especially at the start of each new hoax, when they are fresh and new. Then the Trump supporters, all us common sense patriots, have to gradually talk them down from the ledge. Kneejerk hysteria and cuckery is just what they are used to. You see this a lot on the conservative subreddit, although they are gradually getting better. But even now half the comments will want to discuss whatever bullshit the left is spewing as if it is coming from an intellectually honest place.

True true. I've seen that play out many times as you've described.
This is a good thing. Once the students figure out they don't have to be on campus, costs go down.
