A year and a half ago he had a blue collar job. He quits and then puts the weight on. I've seen it before because it happens all the time. If you have an active job and suddenly stop, you need to do one of two things, cut way back on the eating or start a regular, vigorous exercise regimen and cut back a little bit on the eating.

A few years ago the CDC came out with a report that said, among other things, blue collar workers, on average, are more fit than their white collar counterparts. This makes sense as they are typically much more active during the work day than an office worker. The downside is that if they suddenly stop the activity by changing jobs or something else, they also need to change their eating/exercise habits. This is often times really hard to do for people who are typically older and have an established routine.
