I cannot believe we are all looking at the pre-quills fondly after the debacle that was the last three star wars movies. I only saw one of them... not going to watch Luke toss his lightsaber and then squeeze blue alien milk out of a boob. (Shudder)
My brothers and I got together and watched The Phantom Menace a little over a week ago. In many ways, it has been completely vindicated by history. In other ways, it's every bit as bad as we remember.
The CGI looks like a 2004 video game. Jar Jar Binks is a useless sack of crap who isn't even funny. The decision to make Anakin a small boy with a bowl cut was remarkably awful, and every line that came out of Jake Lloyd's mouth sounded like he was reading it from a script.
Agreed. Soundtrack might be the best, Duel of the Fates is so good.
And the story is more coherent. You can watch all 3 films and despite their issues, its a complete story with actual story arcs. It's not piecemeal like the new stuff.

The best things I can say about the prequels are:
the soundtrack is fucking fantastic
George Lucas had a story he wanted to tell - Anakin suffers great loss and turns to the Dark Side, becoming Darth Vader
