Because they're too worried about US Soccer: a sport which despite being shoved down the throats of Americans for 50 years and featured in every kids' cartoon is about as popular as competitive diarrhea.

That is a sport most Americans outgrow by the time they enter puberty. If foreigners like it, great. It's been the "next big thing" here for decades and never actually catches on. In fact, interest in it is a good litmus test for illegal alien status.

I'm pushing 40 now and in my lifetime every year was the year that we'd adopt the Metric system fully, that Linux would take over the Desktop, that the ice caps will melt after the next ice age, we'll run out of oil and also have flying cars. These are all more likely than Americans liking boney Europeans pretending to be hurt.

It’s popular elsewhere cause it’s a cheap sport to play, basically free. You just need a ball and some goal posts. Majority of kids here growing up play sports that are expensive to get into like hockey, football, and baseball.

I think that might be why basketball is also so universally popular. All you need is a ball and a couple of nets.
