I thought antibiotics were used for infections, not viruses?

Secondary bacterial infections are a consequence of viral pneumonia.

True. But sometimes viruses guve bacterial infections a friendly environment to grow and people end up with pneumonia. Thats what actually kills a lot of the elderly, not the flu virus itself.

Nobody should take antibiotics prophylactcically though unless at high risk. It creates resistant strains of bacteria.
