A friend of mine calls it the Y2K flu.

thehutman 11 points ago +11 / -0

I've been calling it this since the hysteria started. Freakin' nuts. Y2K was very similar with all the panic going on.

My wife was on an airplane when the ball dropped. That's how much she and her dad gave a shit about the y2k panic.

Buncha fuckin normies suddenly reminded they are mortal and freak out and immediately assume the world is ending

Good for her and her dad!

People must be dumber now. I don't remember toilet paper shortages leading up to Y2K

I didn't wanna say that in case it takes longer, but yeah, could be.

Y2K was a non-event because IT professionals did their job.

Believe me, it was a lot of effort. And people with knowledge of legacy systems made a bundle in consulting.

I know, right? I was working for MONTHS to make sure all the code people used was clean.

My reward? "Y2k was a hoax."

Fuck off you sheep.

I made a mistake at work yesterday based on a false assumption and it shook me to my core. I analyzed why I made the assumption and will consciously change my thought process moving forward...

People still on the left at this point are incapable of retrospect and correction. They are proven wrong.... constantly. Rather than question whether they should believe a source that deliberately fed them wrong information, they just memory hole it and move to the next anti-Trump thing.. Over and over and over again.

Never underestimate the amount of freak-out-to-high-heaven the media can do to any situation.

Y2K was predicted to pretty much collapse all economies and cause widespread famine and suffering. Yeah, it didn't happen, but deaths were predicted as technology would stop and people would starve as no commerce could occur and medicine and food would be gone.

The flu, in comparison, has been a part of human life for ages. Based on the media level of freak-out, I'm not betting on worldwide collapse (although they are trying).

Here in the US, we are still managing this quite well, in comparison to the regular flu season which has done way more killing than this one strain. Is it deadly - yes, just like any other flu. It appears to be more deadly in places that have poor medical coverage (cough socialism heathcare). And spare me the THIS IS 30x WORSE which has no statistics to back it - you are just parroting the media's twisted reporting.

Now, does that mean we just walk around blindly? No. To be honest, its been flu season for months and if you haven't already had a plan for it, well, then it shows you really don't get out much. Do your due diligence, but don't turn it into THE SKY IS FALLING Chicken Little media.

Y2K was predicted to pretty much collapse all economies and cause widespread famine and suffering.

You're welcome jerk.

You sound like an ignorant of the world leftist. Thousands of IT professional worked double and triple shifts for months to make sure shit went smoothly.

So, it goes smoothly... oh Y2k was just a hoax.

To be honest at this point and time, I wish I hadn't done all that work, and chaos ensued.

You misunderstand. I never said Y2K is a HOAX. But it was overblown to become the end-all of everything and life on earth. I work in engineering and had to do fixes to customers things to mitigate problems. Some times it was just telling them that there wouldn't be problems, and continually reassuring them it wouldn't cause the end of the world (managers in most cases don't have any kind of technology clue). Doing that takes a cool, logical head, a plan, and steady approach. But people freaking the hell out over every little thing was beyond realistic and the media predicted ultimate calamity. People were hoarding all sorts of stuff. I tried to explain it won't be that big a deal, its under control, but many didn't listen. It's similar today. Cool heads prevail. Crazy fear mongering doesn't do shit.

Yeah, Y2K turned out to be a nothingburger because of PEOPLE LIKE YOU - and I thank you for that!

A virus without a vaccine that was, and will, mutate is more of a threat than a computer bug.

5
HeavenlyTrumpets [S] 5 points ago +7 / -2

PANIC!!

7
CiaramellaTheClown 7 points ago +8 / -1

No need to panic, the comparison just does not work.

The threat over a human virus that kills it a bit more severe than 'unplug your computer'.

I am not sure who you think I am 'listening to'.

Reading an article sourcing

Key Laboratory of Special Pathogens and Biosafety, Wuhan Institute of Virology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Wuhan, China Xing-Yi Ge & Zhengli-Li Shi

about the creation of such a virus, under Obama's administration.

Don't be a Golbert.

You don’t remember it do you?

No, YOU don't remember it, because we did our job and fixed it before it became a problem.

We might not even need a vaccine. Do a simple search using "virus mutates into less deadly form" and just read for ten minutes. Or, the short version - "viruses want to live and so killing the host isn't a great tactic". Look up Farr's Law while you're at it.

cuckslasher 1 point ago +3 / -2

do you know how many viruses mutate every day?

Well they'll just be sittin on 5 packs of toilet paper so I doubt anyone will care. They don't care that they are buying out stock and causing problems for other people so I doubt they'll have the self reflection to feel dumb

Staatssicherheit 1 point ago +2 / -1

Hopefully this will blow over in the US. But the biggest dangers are the potential super-spreaders like the Utah Jazz player rather than hypochondriacs who demand to be tested for no symptoms.

This does illustrate a good point. There are some people who do not think this is a big deal and will not take the appropriate precautions. Watch out for these people, your life is in your own hands.

So can a drunk driving illegal (and it's FAAAR more likely), but I don't see people jumping to handle that situation.

I know I was worried 2 months ago, when it made sense to be worried, because information wasn't available and we didn't know what it would look like here. We're now getting an idea, and it seems pretty clear OUR leader is handling this better and containing it better than pretty much anywhere else.
