Long story short, my family and I went to Disneyland last week and I picked up the worst something and have been miserable all week long. Doctors got the tests today and I’m going in to hopefully hear I’ve got the flu. Never thought I’d want the flu so bad in my life!

••••• UPDATE •••••

So the test they did was two nostril swabs from quest and I tell you what, that was not a pleasant experience! Here’s what it looked like (the bottom one), they had to shove that thing in my nose to the red line both nostrils for two swabs. Here’s kind of what the process looks like

They said it’ll take up to 3 days to know, so I should have results by Monday. But on a positive note, I think I’ll be okay because my lungs were pretty clear she said!

I’ll make another comment on Monday With the results, or should I make a new post? Thanks fam!

Well no, I’ll be without the corona hopefully, but this flu is not leaving me feeling fine.

I had the worst flu of my life in January-February. Took about two months to get rid of it completely but it was HORRIBLE. it also wasn't Coronavirus. There is some extra nasty flu going around this season.

That’s what I’m hoping this is, just some gnarly bug that sucks up my life for a week or two.

Flu that passed around in Ohio jan-feb was kinda bad. My kids got it, but wife and I must have defeated it pretty easily because we just had sniffles. Kids were a wreck though, had to lay down and nap/drink water off and on for 3 days

2
psybrnaut 2 points ago +3 / -1

I got that in January Ohio too after my kids got it. Nasty thing, but after a week and a crash binge through Nyquil and Zpac I was fine

Same here. Only just now is the cough going away (mostly b/c my house gets dry in the winter). But I got better, and op will too

rooftoptendie 3 points ago +4 / -1

I have a loved one who travelled early January and got what they described as a "really nasty flu" and said it left them vomiting, which is really uncommon for that particular person. I've never known them to ever have vomited being sick with anything in the past 20 years. Had a fever and all that business.

They think they actually got the WuFlu then, and it just wasn't recognized as such.

Do any of you think that was the case with what you got? Or was it totally separate. We are on the west coast.

OrangeMan 9 points ago +10 / -1

Even if it is the Wuhan flu, don't let the hysteria get to you. It's not like you have the plague. As long as you don't have any existing health conditions that could aggravate the situation then you'll just feel shitty for a while but you'll be fine. God bless you pede!

8
Dialectic 8 points ago +9 / -1

Water, rest, keep symptoms under control but let the fever do its work. Basically.

2
RlzJohnnyM 2 points ago +8 / -6

Suck it up

It is just a flu

7
CerebralPimp [S] 7 points ago +9 / -2

Totally with you, but no reason not to find out for sure.

2
LugNuts 2 points ago +5 / -3

Why? Three is no treatment.

2

7
LugNuts 7 points ago +9 / -2

Same treatment for any other bad cold or flu: stay hydrated, get rest, have someone who loves you make chicken soup.

3
Razeontherock 3 points ago +4 / -1

False. Respiratory consequences and treatment differ, if it comes to that. Basically, try not to cough uncontrollably, but only productively. Permanent lung damage can result from Wuhan flu.

I have family members that currently have the flu too (influenza B to be exact). They went on a vacation house in a town that currently has that going around. From what I've heard of the symptoms from people, the normal flu is more annoying to deal with.

9
BuffaloReaper94 9 points ago +9 / -0

A. I hope, and I'm confident that you'll come out okay B. If it is COVID, it would be helpful for you to post your symptoms, what the doctor tells you, your treatment, duration, etc. The disinformation is neck-deep - some actual facts might help calm people down.

"Info wars." They are fighting us with disinformation! Some good solid information would really help.

1
BuffaloReaper94 1 point ago +2 / -1

Only the elderly are affected, but everyone is going to die, but don't worry, most people don't even present symptoms but it's the worst flu you'll ever get - really just a fever but you'll end up on a ventilator. It's a 3% mortality rate but half the country will die.

1
Razeontherock 1 point ago +1 / -0

You left out your shit post flair.

Not only elderly are affected. Those with respiratory problems to begin with are likely to not fare well. Permanent lung damage is a higher likelihood than from your run of the mill infection. How to use a ventilator has reduced deaths from 41 out of 100 to 16 out of 100, since about 2010. No guarantee that those operating your ventilator have this new improved training.

Very unlikely there's a 3% mortality rate. We have no way of knowing, yet.

1
BuffaloReaper94 1 point ago +1 / -0

I'm not arguing - asking in good faith: aren't those with respiratory problems more likely to not fare well with any flu? What makes this strain so monumentally different that it (somewhat uniquely) warrants panic buying and fist fights in the street?

I'm not all that worried about catching this thing. What does worry me, though, is my mother catching it, especially from me as a carrier. Most of the panicked information being disseminated doesn't point out the elderly/weakened (for lack of a better word) angle. That's more to my point: if I believe what I hear, just from "respected" outlets, not to mention keyboard warriors, all of the above is true - young people aren't really affected, but even young people are dropping like flies; there's a 3% mortality rate but 30% of those infected will die, etc. There's no way of knowing wherein lies the truth. That feeds the panic, and that seems, to me at least, to be the point of all this: panic as many people as possible, crash the system, and have that much more control.

0
Razeontherock 0 points ago +1 / -1

Absolutely nothing warrants panic buying (or selling, in the case of stocks) or fights breaking out in the street, which I have not heard of. Also, protip: if you ever have to defend yourself, do NOT use fists! If you run into somebody like me all you'll do is hurt your hands. OTOH I could gut you like a fish with my bare hands. That approach will put an end to the threat pretty quickly. It takes practice and conditioning.

This virus affects human lungs VERY differently than others. It thickens our alveoli so that 02 can't pass from lung to bloodstream, neither can C02 be eliminated from our bloodstream to the lungs to be exhaled. Further, blood can pass through the alveoli so that our lungs fill with blood. Not a fun way to die. How this might differ from pulmonary edema I'm unsure.

You can be at that point on a ventilator in a hospital and they won't necessarily know wtf to do. And if your lungs are damaged anywhere near that extent, you sustain lots of permanent damage. Improved techniques have increased survival of this condition from 59 out of 100 to 84 out of 100 since roughly 2010. There are also lots of simple therapies you can do yourself if you're heading in that direction to mitigate all this. I'm watching videos designed to train pulmonary therapists as it seems to me it may well come in handy.

There's a trail a mile long that this is a bioweapon. We should expect it to differ from flu and colds we have experience with. The odd thing is how ineffective it is at killing or even slowing down so many.

I wouldn't bother going to the doctor over this personally. What are they going to do, tell you to rest and force a quarantine on you?

11
CerebralPimp [S] 11 points ago +14 / -3

There’s a specific test you can take to let you know if you have the corona or not, that’s why I’m going. Peace of mind is something worth having.

6
Liberty4All 6 points ago +6 / -0

One thing I'm confused about: I thought the protocol is to rule out flu before testing for the Wuhan virus?

The flu test is done in the doctor's office and only takes a few minutes.

4
UltimatePistachio 4 points ago +9 / -5

I guess so, it's your choice to do what you want. If you find out you have it then I guess you can stress out about that then. Hopefully you'll get over whatever it is you have or it's not anything worse.

I'm just saying you're putting yourself in a risky situation where you'll have an enforced quarantine put on you (if you do have it) - you might even wind up feeling better in a couple days and wind up being stuck in your house for a couple weeks.

Whatever happens, hopefully you'll get well soon!

6
CerebralPimp [S] 6 points ago +6 / -0

Thankfully I work from home, so that’s already been resolved ;)

5
Barbs 5 points ago +11 / -6

Stop scolding him for doing the right thing you dolt.

1
UltimatePistachio 1 point ago +6 / -5

Scolding him? What? Ok you're just an idiot...

I'm really curious to know what'll happen if he's diagnosed to have it. Likely will be told to rest and try to recover. If things were to get worse then go to the ER... so what's the point?

6
CerebralPimp [S] 6 points ago +10 / -4

From my understanding, this thing is extremely contagious and deadly to certain people. My neighbors and parents are all past 60, so I’d like to know if I need to stay away from them so I don’t kill them.

5
UltimatePistachio 5 points ago +9 / -4

If you're sick you generally shouldn't be around elderly and young people alike... you should generally not be around people.... I guess if you need a doctor to tell you that then that's your choice to make.

5
CerebralPimp [S] 5 points ago +8 / -3

...common sense obviously, but you’re acting like the coronavirus isn’t a thing or as contagious as it is.

They would also try to determine who has been in close contact with him, and isolate them, too.

0
50shousewife 0 points ago +2 / -2

There is no treatment other than supportive and if he is sick, why would it be any different for this virus than another?

2
deleted 2 points ago +3 / -1
5
DisgustedByMisleadia 5 points ago +6 / -1

If that's what he has, that's exactly what he should do.

A presumptive positive test will trigger an effort to identify his close contacts and notify them, so they can be isolated.

This is the only way we can stop a rapid spread.

Just saw another thread on where Disneyland will be closing for a week starting the 14th. Think they should probably close for longer that that. If we could cancel all large gatherings for a few weeks I think transmission would go way down. There's a reason Korea and China finally got it under control- they got serious about it. Just look at Italy- do not want that nightmare happening here. People need to be smart and do some common sense things. Having said that, even if you're being responsible, all it takes is some idiot who coughs and doesn't cover their mouth- had that happen with a cashier the other day. Pissed me off. Show some fucking common sense and consideration for others people.

7
CerebralPimp [S] 7 points ago +7 / -0

Don’t know yet, I’ll ask when I get there

3
DisgustedByMisleadia 3 points ago +3 / -0

There are two tests: a "field" test and the CDC "confirmation" test.

If you test positive for the first one, you are "presumed positive", pending confirmation by the CDC test.

The time interval will be different for each. I believe that Quest and LabCorp can do tests now, so that would be relatively quick.

4
myredditnameisfake 4 points ago +5 / -1

I have heard 1 to 4 days. It takes longer if you do not have the infection.

2
CerebralPimp [S] 2 points ago +2 / -0

Which test are you referring to? I’ll find out which one I get and advise.

2
myredditnameisfake 2 points ago +3 / -1

Ummm, the Corona test? Whether it be blood or a swab, it is not instant. From what I have read anyways. I could be wrong.

4
Kosecant 4 points ago +4 / -0

My understanding is it still takes three days to get results back on the corona test.

1
CerebralPimp [S] 1 point ago +1 / -0

5
Deplora 5 points ago +5 / -0

Bright side: if you do have it, you'll get over it (because you started out healthy enough to be running around Disneyland), and be able to donate plasma that will save other people. This is the breaking news on effective treatment.

2
CerebralPimp [S] 2 points ago +2 / -0

Plasma donation will help others if I have it and fight it effectively?

6
Deplora 6 points ago +6 / -0

That's what the experts are saying today. Likely to be at least 4 weeks before they could get a protocol in place to allow this to be done beyond small clinical trials, but right now it's looking like the most promising treatment (or possibly also prevention) that could be deployed in a reasonably short time frame. The antibodies in the plasma of people who have recovered can be tranfused into people who are infected, and help fight it off. Presumably this could also be used a prevention for active infection, and if so that use would probably be limited to health care workers and others who are at high risk for infection through their urgently important work.

3
Liberty4All 3 points ago +3 / -0

This sounds familiar - didn't they use this approach to save some of the Ebola patients?

3
Deplora 3 points ago +3 / -0

I don't recall, but it's quite possible.

1
Razeontherock 1 point ago +1 / -0

This would only work AFTER patients have fully recovered. It's an interesting idea for a quick vaccine / remedy / therapy.

Should be minimal to no side effects or risks?

2
Deplora 2 points ago +2 / -0

Only risk I can think of would be other infectious agents getting transferred along with the plasma, but I think our protocols for screening those out have been pretty nearly perfected, You don't hear about anyone contracting HIV from blood or plasma transfusions any more.
