The logic was originally, they would pay for it indirectly. Nobody ever thought that Mexico would literally hand over cash from their treasury to pay for the wall America was going to build, including Trump. That's a bullshit talking point from liberals. They were going to "pay for the wall" by having the income stream from America disrupted, which would take away a significant portion of income from Mexico's economy.

Now, it honestly seems that Trump has failed on this issue, so far at least. But, we really don't know what all happened when he met with the president of Mexico, but Trump seems to have put that idea on the back burner after that meeting so maybe he made a good deal.

That's basically the very thing that has happened though. Mexico has agreed to and is carrying out border control on their end, which results in direct savings for the US. The more people they stop at their southern border and inside their country, the less we have to deal with.
