Starting Monday, the people with infinite wisdom have come up with a super plan to prevent the spread of this super duper deadly disease.

Each morning, all employees have to stop by a predetermined nurse station to have their temperature taken. If it's below 100.5, they will then need to make their way to an area to take a 3-question survey on how they're feeling. They can then go clock in for the day and get to work. They can't clock in beforehand.

If their temperature is 100.5 or above, they will be turned away and sent home. They will need to take personal time, get to a doctor, get a doctor's note saying they are corona-free, and that they can return to work.

Also, no outside visitors, only approved vendors, only essential personnel, the cafeteria is closed, the giftshop is closed, the special needs school is closed, and no one without a badge can get past certain points, no exceptions.

Mail and packages will be delivered to a table directly in front of the main doors. There are signs everywhere kindly reminding people not to forget what I consider basic, fucking hygiene. Thank God for that.

In the meantime, another 300 people have died of the flu since they made this decision. Fucking clown world.

Thank God above for shopping at Costco, we buy in bulk thus saving money and we won’t need to buy toilet paper for a month and a half each time we do. Hopefully by then the tp hoarders regain their sanity. (However much they started out with)

I work at a grocery store and it's insane. People are buying it almost as fast as I can put it on the shelf. I dont even get what the deal is with toilet paper and this.

We just happened to have bought a big 48-pack of Charmin from Sam's Club last week before all this insanity. That's good for at least six weeks for the two of us.

We always buy in the bulk so we don't have to worry about paper products running out. WE stocked up on Kleenex too during cold/flu season.

7
smartredditor 7 points ago +7 / -0

It's not only that - no doctor is going to take on the liability of declaring someone free of the virus, even if a test comes back negative.

4
rooftoptendie 4 points ago +4 / -0

I wonder if theres a way to get anyones attention about how dumb that policy they just made up is. Lawyers, local news, or maybe the HR or someone else at the local hospital.

Because that is so fucked up I could scream. the fuck if I'm going to the doctor right now unless I had to. Think of all the shit you could catch there.

I'd refuse. I'd call in to a doctor, and then call and tell the employer that you called in to the doctor and what they said. And I'd tell em that's all you can make me do. I won't stand in a hospital triage for you and possibly catch something I dont have. And if you fucking try me, I'll lawyer up.

aparition42 39 points ago +40 / -1

Under normal circumstances it can take weeks to get back a test result specifying exactly which of about two hundred possible virus strains is causing your cold.

The test is expensive, time-consuming, and completely unnecessary because treatment is exactly the same in the vast majority of cases. You manage symptoms with over the counter medicine, rest, and drink plenty of fluids.

Sending every single person with a cold to the doctor's office is just about the worst possible idea. You're just going to clog the system with people that don't need to be there making it that much more difficult to treat people that actually need help.

Honestly, this is one of the biggest problems with socialized medicine. If people can go to the hospital any time they have the sniffles with no direct, out-of-pocket cost to themselves, they're fare more likely to waste medical resources.

10
Eightmoreyears 10 points ago +10 / -0

Exactly. And going to the hospital or clinic is a great way to pick up more viruses or bugs. Everyone getting tested would only exacerbate the spread of the disease! Only people who have underlying health conditions and the elderly who are showing symptoms should be tested in my opinion.

7
Shroudedf8 7 points ago +7 / -0

Great point. When people have skin in the game, they tend to be a little (lot) more judicious with their actions.

  • Preventative measures
  • OverREACTION

Pick one.

If you are reacting, it is too late. If you are preventing, you are not "overreacting."

"I eat healthy to stay healthy"

"But you're not even sick! What an overreaction!"

Regardless of any any other bullshit, preventative measures should always be on the table when a new virus appears. Until it's been properly studied, long term, in a controlled environment, "overreactions" are necessary and prudent. Next year we will know exactly how it behaves, and then take Appropriate action.

10
deleted 10 points ago +14 / -4
6
Isolated_Patriot 6 points ago +7 / -1

Right. I'm agreeing with you.

I'm saying calling a preventative measure an overreaction is an idiotic and counterproductive thing the media does. A preventative action is not a reaction at all. People can say Overly Cautious action, but that doesn't make Drumph look bad, it makes him look prudent.

4
ShiffsDeadHooker 4 points ago +4 / -0

Last evening my wife and I went to a visitation (a guy we both know, his elderly father died) and I took a bottle of hand sanitizer with me. My wife sorta rolled her eyes when I put it in the car, but I said she'd be glad I did. We did the visitation, and shook hands with our friend, his brother, and a couple of other people in the receiving line. I made sure that I didn't touch anything with my right hand (like my face) and when I got out to the car, with my left hand I opened it and got the sanitizer going. My wife was then like "Oh, I need some." No kidding. We just, in essence, shook hands with hundreds of people. Many of them were elderly and probably at least a few had something or other. And it made me think of the times I hadn't done this in the past.

We've got far, far too many "The media says it's bad, therefore it can't possible be bad at all, and must therefore be good, lets all get coronovirus!" bullshiters around here lately.

Yes the media is absolutely playing panic for political gain, but you can't ignore actual risk and problems just because the noise ratio is so high. We haven't had a Spanish flu or black plague equivalent BECAUSE of modern preventative measures. No one should be panicking, at all, but everyone should be exorcising caution and preventative measures.

Since most people have 0 to mild symptoms, and do not get tested, because they either do not know they are sick or think it's a mild cold, where does the 15 to 20% figure come from?

2

2

5
rooftoptendie 5 points ago +6 / -1

You skipped straight over "moderate"!

5
publ1us 5 points ago +5 / -0

So what were all trying to say is that the truth is somewhere in the middle:

  1. Yes, we should prevent the spread so as not to endanger actually at risk people and overwhelm the system.

  2. No we shouldn't panic, the actual virus will not be bad for the vast majority of people.

Unfortunately, many people seem to be unable to separate the two, and think the former means to buy as much toilet paper as possible, because if we need to prevent this that means it's going to kill us all!

It hurts my brain to try to think like that.. But that's the asymmetric information leverage point: the MSM hypes it up like it's going to kill everyone and the entire entertainment industry shuts down.

What really rustles my jimmies is when someone shuts down talk of the virus being "politicized" as a conspiracy theory. What's so hard to believe that evil people would use something that's happening for their gain? That story is integral to all of human history.

I've received emails so far from my bank and the place I get my tires changed informing me of their coronavirus regimen and how they are taking steps to protect everyone.

This is the most overblown, hysterical response I've ever witnessed in my 53 years. Can't really blame the companies though because they want to stay in business and people are being terrified into not going out in public. I caught the swine flu (H1N1) in the 2009 pandemic and I wasn't even aware of it being an issue because there was none of this hype surrounding it. But then, 0bama was President then and there was no incentive to create a hysteria over it.

Need to be able to clock in

The clock itself is a disease vector.

I agree company should pay you if you are there waiting in a line to have your temperature taken, but there is a logistics problem here.

You need to be checked before being inside with anyone.

There's a reason the drive through testing areas are all outside. Being cooped up in line with potentially sick people is a great way to make everyone sick

(The drive through testing area locally is a parking garage with constant fresh breeze at the University of Washington)

kshoggi -9 points ago +3 / -12

What kind of person gets pissed about not getting paid 30 seconds extra when they get to work to answer three questions. Probably the kind of person that isn't working that hard after they clock in anyways.

This guy probably works in food service and his company is doing due diligence to protect its customers.

11
GeneralTsoTofu [S] 11 points ago +11 / -0

It's a corporate environment, not food service. Also, it's not the 30 seconds; it's the fact they will have one or two nurses for the 300 people who arrive at 8am. If hourly employees clock in more than 5 minutes late, they lose 15 minutes. If they're 20 minutes late, they lose 30, and so on.

I'm salary, so it won't affect me but there are more hourly employees than salaried.

2

ChickNorris 2 points ago +2 / -0

Disagree. I do think that if people are feeling sick and especially if they have a fever they should self quarantine until they start getting better. But I don't run out to the doctor every time I have the flu so I'm not going to run out to the doctor just because I might have this. I'm not in the category of people at risk of dying from this virus at all.

I do agree that anyone that has a compromised immune system, is over the age of 60 or has something like COPD should see a doctor to determine if they have the virus and if so then get admitted so they can be placed on IVs and kept hydrated. My mother, for instance, falls in this category. So if I developed a fever I would not go around her until I'm well but I wouldn't go to the doctor unless I'm seriously ill. This is how doctors offices and medial clinics become overwhelmed and have to choose between treating elderly or not. IMO, it's a dumb policy and a huge over reaction.

They're making everyone use a COV19 test just due to a temperature? If they've not been traveling or anywhere near any COV19 that's basically wasting a test.

Aren't people far more likely to get the flu than COV19 unless they've been traveling or in large groups of people.

Should be AFTER clock-in, the test takes time to process and will cost hours...but other precautions make sense until we hit a peak...it’s a bit more than common sense but not too bad compared to some precautions being taken.

Im a college sports official, I lost my entire baseball schedule. Thousands of dollars down the tube. Fuckin sucks, all over a virus that none of the people involved in these sports would hardly even have trouble getting over.

Mine hasn't gone quite that nuts, but there are daily meetings, updates, new policies and procedures, etc...

You're lucky your work place isn't shut down completely. Someone at a company we deal with came to work with the virus after the person's parents came back from Italy infected.
