Paid leave is fronted by the govt. Im not necessarily a fan of handouts, but the greater good is served here.

15
kjj9 15 points ago +15 / -0

This would not be a handout.

Takings clause in the Constitution requires that the federal government reimburse citizens if it takes their property - generally eminent domain. It seems logical that if the federal government is ordering businesses to close, the spirit (at the very least) of the takings clause stipulates that they should compensate for it.

It would be a lot less work for the feds to compensate businesses that keep paying employees during a mandated shutdown than to compensate the workers directly.

Very good point

Dan, you're fast. But maybe slow down and think a bit. The payroll tax cut is a cut that goes back to the people that work. The employer doesn't pocket it. Please, try a search engine.

Fastmandan is a Trump supporter, he often posted on T_D. He often has views contrary to the mainstream Trump supporters, but so did I. including opposing some of his comments. But he's entitled to his opinions nevertheless.

As my comment to this announcement, just yesterday Trump said in a conference the House bill is not OK because they included a lot of pork on the side. What changed? Or not the same bill? If Dems promised to support something else (like wall funding)in exchange better make them vote on that one first.

2
MAGA_MEXICAN_CHILI 2 points ago +2 / -0

Donno, maybe the Democrat donors called Pelosi and talked some sense into her. Right now there's no room for politics. Pretty sure if Trump wanted he could just circumvent and go EO, or use something that would give him lateral movement to get the aid to the people quickly without congress. Even if the Dems were to sue, it would paint them in such a negative light that no court would take the case/file an injunction without the ire coming down on them.

In other words, the Democrats played stupid and lost with the bill getting reworked for signage come Saturday.

As I understand it, employees get the payroll tax cut too

No payroll tax cut. Another whopping failure out of congress. Trump should have said he wanted NO payroll tax cut, absolutely NONE and we’d have one

23
GodEmperorsNewGroove 23 points ago +23 / -0

I guarantee that is coming. Trump NAILED it today!

  1. National Emergency to focus on fighting the virus and empowering healthcare providers

  2. Family First Bill is a winner!

  3. Next step is to provide relief to small business and low to mid income workers.

8
ApplePie 8 points ago +9 / -1

I've already seen posts about how this is a big business bailout while he had big businesses standing behind them saying they would do anything the government asked them to do to assist. And they weren't tin the Rose Garden accepting dollars. So fucking stupid. The sheep are dumb.

2
Swolehas 2 points ago +4 / -2

I hope so, but I’m doubtful

Payroll tax cut was door in the face technique. Reverse psycology can fail badly when the enemy calls your bluff.

2
Swolehas 2 points ago +2 / -0

I was joking about the reverse psychology. But either way we really should be getting a payroll tax cut. Some industries are getting slammed from demand shortages

As someone who doesn't get sick and already has a month of sick leave saved up, I'd rather have a payroll tax cut.

9
Swolehas 9 points ago +9 / -0

Employees get the payroll tax cut too

2
GarudaOne 2 points ago +3 / -1

I'm in California. We have paid sick leave. It's bullshit. It doesn't carry over at the end of the year and you can't use it if you don't get sick. Just a waste. Would rather just have more vacation hours.

They better have cleaned this shit up.

1
squarkle_bargle 1 point ago +10 / -9

No offense but I hope this garbage doesn't pass. This bill requires all private businesses to provide weeks of paid sick leave. The government shouldn't be intervening in the market that way.

This bill also provided literally billions for mandatory unemployment and food stamp benefits. It'll just continue funding a cycle of dependency.

12
Aquamine-Amarine 12 points ago +17 / -5

So you want us all to go (possibly) weeks without working and not getting paid? How the hell will we be able to support ourselves and pay the bills then? When most businesses refuse to help their employees?

6
squarkle_bargle 6 points ago +7 / -1

There should be a sunset provision for the end of the coronavirus outbreak, then.

This bill needs to be more narrowly focused.

3
Chick-Fil-A 3 points ago +5 / -2

Not the government’s responsibility. Put on your big boy pants fellow centipede, there’s plenty of economic opportunity in a crisis.

3
dandylionsummer 3 points ago +5 / -2

This keeps people out of the workplace who have the corona virus, but need to work to pay the bills, thereby infecting everyone around them. I'd much rather the waiter be paid to stay home, rather than coughing in my food.

-2
JediMasterPepe -2 points ago +1 / -3

You see what the problem is don't you?

You're buying into the MSM induced hysteria. Relax.

2
MAGA_MEXICAN_CHILI 2 points ago +2 / -0

Let's put it this way,

I rather have the waiter stay at home knowing that being sick does not mean him going on welfare than come to work and get my family sick with whatever he's got.

Its a chain effect and people who argue "We ShOuLdn'T OfFeR tHeSe TyPeS oF tHiNgS" are typically the first to complain when they find out something was spread, because "James came to work with a 103 degree fever gave half the staff a viral infection at Pete's Pizza shop, tune in for more info at 11."

Ideally, companies should stipulate sick leave and not hold it against a person calling off because they became ill. Companies in the service industry do that and frankly its a putrid practice. While it happens more in the service industry, its not isolated to other industries who do the same exact shit. Neither Republican nor Democrat has found a way to fix this shady behavior. Tax credits to companies who offer paid sick leave as a permanent thing would go a long way to secure a healthier society, of course baked into the law said sick leave must show a doctors note.

The easier way to pay for this is to well, make Europe shoulder more of its own defenses.

Robbing and stealing food? I think you’ve been watching too much TV news. I’m not saying you need to start your own business, I’m saying leave your crappy job because your employer isn’t responsible for your well being and neither is the government. I’m sure UPS, Walmart delivery, and areas related to healthcare are looking to speed hire some people to meet demand.

This bill isn’t proposing that you would be paid by the gov based on what you’ve paid in taxes, it’s proposing to mandate businesses to provide these benefits to their employees which will cause an undue burden to small business owners.

If you have a crappy employer, leave with your dignity. Don’t rely on daddy government to act as a union mob boss to strong arm your employer in to paying you to not work.

-1
SisterCovfefe -1 points ago +4 / -5

Almost half of Americans live paycheck to paycheck, that't why.

You going to let them starve? Or are you going to help your neighbor with the relatively insignificant amount of taxes you pay?

3
MasterOfIllusions 3 points ago +4 / -1

If generosity is so important, first be generous with your own money before demanding everyone else's. If the cost is so insignificant, why don't you just buy your neighbor a few meals? Donate some of your groceries or cash directly to their doorstep. Be the change you want to see in the world.

Something I've learned from reading that guy for 3 years... he's brilliant at big-picture macroeconomics and foreign policy (especially anything related to China). He's a Sundunce when it comes to Washington DC drama. Remember this is the same guy who propagated the theory that there were "white hats" and "black hats" fighting a shadowy intelligence community war and that Sessions was a white hat. When he finally accepted Sessions was a cuck, he denounced the Q-anons (which, to be honest, Conservative Treehouse was never part of that nuttiness) but never, ever took responsibility for the fact he himself had helped propagate the "Sessions is our guy" theory.

Can someone clarify if the Federal government is going to foot the bill for the free testing and the paid leave? Or is it going to force the healthcare providers/private insurance companies and the business owners/employers to pay for the free testing and the paid leave respectively? I was not able to deduce that front the language in the tweets or the article. Thanks in advance!
