My parents lived through socialist Allende's Chile. You saw a line and you got in it no matter what it was for. We also used newspaper for our butts. So dont throw out your "what happened " book or the neighbor's NYT paper.
My parents grew up in communism as well. The kids stood in line when the parents couldn't. You better hope there was still bread/butter/whatever you needed when you got to the front of the line... otherwise you got nothing.

The rationale was: If there's a line, then there's something I will want, and may not be able to get later.
