The media is driving the panic of this virus intentionally to damage the markets and trump, and drive viewership. It’s completely obvious to anyone with half a brain. Unfortunately since a huge percentage of the country believes whatever they see on the news or in their news feed this is leading to a problem.

Basically it’s become a self fulfilling prophecy of the media saying there’s a panic to buy food and supplies, which is causing people to panic buy food and supplies. I’ve never seen the media stoop so low as before this and I’ve seen them do some off the wall shit.

Once the testing picks up and people see the ridiculously low mortality rate this has, or it stops polling so well for them to keep driving this story, I think the media companies need to be held accountable for what they’re doing. It’s unacceptable to me that an industry so clearly biased against the president and towards getting viewership could have the capability to sow this much chaos.

Sorry for the typos and wall of text, I’m just frustrated.

They're bankrupting the working and middle classes to line their own pockets, and "democratic socialists" are all for it.

Between the quarantine on T_D and a convenient virus from a country whose ass we just beat in a trade war, and the media’s reaction to it, it feels like we’re beset on all sides.

Oh, yes. Definitely. Just don’t pin your hopes on it.

I hope there is a way to hold them accountable. A class action lawsuit would be awesome.

I agree. This panic buying is 100% on the fake news.

I work in a place where I see 100 people per day. 90% are disgusted and blame the Media.

Probably the best thing anyone can do is talk to the people they know about how the media are professional liars. At all levels. From the local newspaper to CNN the so-called journalist are incapable of not spinning stories (no matter how trivial) to be something other than what they are.

The media is not factual, much less truthful, I think it's always been that way, the big difference now is the internet and the media isn't playing smart anymore because of their TDS.

Like an 11 trillion dollar lawsuit. The people vs MSN.

I hate to be that guy, but they’re preparing for some deep shit. I’ve been through outbreaks and pandemics before, and I’ve never seen mobilization at this level. Be frustrated at the media for panicking people, but PLEASE do not let that lessen your caution about COVID-19.

Far too many people are turning themselves off because of the media hype, and that will also make things worse.

Can you elaborate on why you think that? I’m not telling anyone to go lick door knobs but I don’t see anything that would lead me to believe this is anything more than a hit job on the president.

China, a country of over 1.35 billion people, had just 82,000 cases of the virus, and only about 3,800 deaths. That means, of the 82,000 people who got the virus, over 95 % survived.

Now, 82,000 out of 1.35 billion is 0.0061 percent.

If the U.S. gets even twice the cases China had, we're still only looking at 20,700 cases. Which would mean only just over 1,000 deaths in the U.S.

And again, this is taking the numbers from China and being generous. Even if China only reported 20% of the deaths, we're still looking at extremely low odds here.

I think a lot of it has to do with the perceived 3% mortality rate. With the amount of cases absolutely being under reported, this virus looks like a legit killer. In actuality if you were to accurately measure the total cases vs mortality rate, people would see what a croc of shit this whole thing is.

I'm sorry you got downvoted 'pede. That's how mortality rates (numerators and denominators) work. If you only test the sick & dying people, you have a high numerator (people who died) and a low denominator (people that you know have the virus). If you have widespread testing procedures, like South Korea, and you screen huge chunks of the population, guess what? You find out that the virus is a lot more prevalent than you previously thought, and a lot of people have it (expands your denominator) but aren't that sick (numerator is the same). This means that the mortality rate is lower (and more accurate) if you sample everyone rather than just the ones who are at death's door.

That's why I trust the South Korea data more than the US data.

I agree, Trump has been forced, and I’m not saying that’s a bad thing. But he has been forced to do all of these things because if he didn’t the media would say he’s responsible for every death from the virus. Spoiler alert for everyone: they will anyways.
