Stop hocking as much if you can. It’s inflames the tonsils. You may still be fighting something, but at least it won’t hurt your throat so much.

What helped mine hurt less was a salt water gargle. You need like a tablespoon in 8ozs of warm water.

My problem if I stop doing that is it gets in my chest and I start feeling like crap. Then I cough and my tonsils hurt anyway.

Definitely will start the salt gargle though.

What you’re inadvertently doing is making your sinus cavity a storage ground for infection.

Blow your nose gently. Stop pulling it back though the pallet. If it gets to your chest that’s ok because it moves down and out of the sinuses. Look up postural drainage, too. It will help if coughing isn’t easy for you.

It sounds to me like it may take a while for you to stop the habit, but if you do you’ll find the irritation will actually stay away for good.

My tonsils are generally sore before the drainage starts. Unfortunately I was a strep kid, so I think my tonsils are just going to be sore any time I'm sick. But in general I blow my nose before clearing my palate... that second portion just gets what's already back there that isn't ejected out the nose.

If I just let it drain the illness lasts a lot longer. That's why I got over it in a few days instead of a couple weeks.
