Well they had to stop Bernie no matter what. Even if it meant propping up a dummy who'll lose to Trump. From the DNC point of view, Bernie would be worse for them than another 4 years of Trump. With Trump they can just use him as a punching bag and continue to blame him for every problem, ever, but President Bernie would turn their whole party upside down from the inside.
