I graduated from the academy in the late 1980s. We were trained to use deadly force if we feared for our life or the life of another person. We were shown lots of videos of cops getting shot, especially during traffic stops. We were also trained to react to a threat of deadly force with deadly force, so someone holding a deadly weapon and making any movement to bring that weapon to bear would be a shoot situation.
